SEATTLE, WASHINGTON: Irina Solomonova and Micah Lussier of 'Love Is Blind' justified their on-screen behavior after fans called them "mean girls." After receiving harsh criticism from fans online, the pair defended themselves, labeling their actions a "coping mechanism" to deal with the predicament they were placed in.

Season 4 of 'Love Is Blind' introduced fans to a whole new ensemble of singles, including Micah and Irina, who turned out to be stereotypical mean girls. The Netflix reality dating show challenges participants to form long-term relationships based solely on personality, eliminating appearances from the equation until the participants are engaged to be married. The remainder of the experiment, which includes a vacation to get to know each other, living together in close confines, and meeting each other's friends and family, prepare the pairs to decide whether to marry at the conclusion of the season. Viewers soon notice that Micah is somewhat separated from the other women, typically only interacting with Irina, as she progresses through the pod phase of the process, which resulted in a pair that has received a lot of backlashes online since the season's debut.

'Needed that in that moment'

Irina and the marketing manager were both chosen as contestants on Netflix's fourth season of the hit dating program. While looking for The One, viewers observed the two friends making fun of the other women. Irina made news in the 'Love Is Blind' Season 4 pods for her outspoken personality, which seemed to irritate several of her fellow co-stars, except for pod bestie Micah. "I mean, you know what? So be it," the marketing manager told Us Weekly exclusively ahead of Season 4's debut earlier this month. "What she did for me was make me laugh and reminded me who I am [and] that I like to laugh. I like to joke, like, this is a really serious situation, but I don’t have to be miserable. Like, I can enjoy myself a little bit, and she gave me that, and for that, I don’t regret it."

"For us, it was really helpful to have a little sense of normalcy," Micah told Entertainment Weekly. "Being able to laugh and make light and make jokes and, well, maybe sometimes the jokes didn't land, or maybe it didn't look the best, but we needed that in that moment to feel like a normal person. Because you're a part of this experience that is so beyond words. To be able to make a little bit of light out of such a hard thing was really helpful." Micah went on to say that because she and Irina are in their twenties, they "have to grow up from our mistakes."

Irina told EW that each contestant dealt with being on the show in their own unique manner. "Me and Micah's coping mechanism was laughing about it. And I honestly will say on the record, 100%, I did not intentionally ever want to hurt anyone. [Hearing] that I hurt people's feelings genuinely breaks my heart," Irina said. Irina went on to add that there will most likely be "some bridges that I'll have to mend" and that she didn't mean to harm anyone's emotions. "But I think, for me, in the experience, I was kind of zoned out and in my own thing of how I'm feeling, and I didn't really realize how that could affect other people," she explained to EW. "With Micah, we were laughing because, yes, it was very serious, and it was very intense, and it was very hard, so I don't want to brush it off and say that we weren't taking it seriously." She added, "We didn't intend to be mean or intentionally hurt anybody at all. That does honestly hurt me, hearing that, and I hope I can have some conversations to fix that later."

Micah and Irina's 'mean girl' moments

Micah and Irina both found themselves in the middle of a love triangle in the first few episodes. Micah, for her part, was divided between Kwame Appiah and Paul Peden, who couldn't decide between her and either Chelsea Griffin or Amber Wilder, respectively. Meanwhile, Irina rapidly became friends with criminal defense attorney Zack Goytowski, despite his own struggles to choose between the Solo creator and fellow competitor Bliss Poureetezadi.

As their emotions for Zack grew stronger in the pods, Irina and Bliss' animosity grew stronger. Things came to a head when Irina seemed envious that the senior program manager was making cookies for Zack's birthday — despite the fact that she had forgotten what day it was. Both of them grumbled about each other to the Seattle resident, leaving him conflicted about his final choice. Zack eventually ditched Bliss in favor of his relationship with the Russian native. While he proposed sight unseen, they eventually split up not long after meeting in person.

Micah's behavior makes her difficult to like in general, as she has an attitude toward other women. On 'Love Is Blind,' this comes across as cruel and severe. Despite the fact that the women in the pods are all dating the same men, Micah appears to have problems with all the women in the house except Irina. She overhears their conversations, mocks them for sharing, and rolls her eyes when they weep after emotional discussions. Furthermore, she violates one of 'Love Is Blind's founding principles by publicly flirting with someone else's fiance after the couples are engaged.

The first five episodes of 'Love Is Blind' Season 4 are available for viewing only on Netflix. The next three episodes will air on March 31.
