Met Gala 2023: From Lil Nas X to Jared Leto, worst looks from red carpet of fashion event of the year
NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: This year, the Met Gala is paying tribute to the legendary German fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld, who died in 2019 at the age of 85. The theme of the event is "Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty". Well, the celebrities went to great lengths to honor the dress code and bring on their fashion game, but did they all succeed?
Arriving at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on May 1, 2023, the biggest and brightest of Hollywood royalty arrived on the red carpet and made their mark, while some missed and failed to pull off the theme. From Ariana DeBose's ill-advised outfit to Amanda Seyfried's no-effort ensemble, here are some of the worst looks from the 2023 Met Gala.

Ariana DeBose
The ‘West Side Story’ star was a fashion fail in Joseph Altuzarra’s bright yellow gown. The attire featured bizarre fur-trimmed sleeves and also had an odd waistline and a black cape-like piece on the back. Though she played safe with accessories as she opted for a pair of silver earrings, necklaces, and rings, the outfit somehow missed the mark.
Quinta Brunson
The ‘Abott Elementary’ creator made her Met Gala debut wearing Prabal Gurung’s gown. The outfit had a deep V-neckline with a pink and black sheer train attached to it. The gown was also adorned with silver sequins. The 33-year-old star paired it with a pair of black sheer gloves. However, the debut look didn’t turn heads and simply failed to wow.
Amanda Seyfried
The 37-year-old ‘Mama Mia’ actress was seen dripping in a gold chainmail corset minidress as she arrived on the red carpet. She opted for a big curly hairdo, smoky eyes, and a bold red lip. Keeping the look monochrome, the actress wore a pair of golden sandals, some matching earrings, and rings. Her last appearance was in 2018 and we just wished she opted beyond just a couple of gold strings.
Rachel Brosnahan
The actress made her Met Gala debut with the ‘Camp: Notes on Fashion’ theme in 2019. In 2023, she opted for a sheer top with built-in nipple pasties, which was paired with a long black skirt and blazer. The outfit featured cutoff gloves but frankly, it was a disaster.
Sydney Sweeney
Sydney Sweeney donned a doll-like nude and black Miu Miu gown. Though the curve-hugging dress worked, the large black bow at the bottom made it look tacky. For her hair, the ‘Euphoria’ star, 25, styled it in loose waves and kept her look minimal. To complete the look, she carried a small black bag, again a Miu Miu creation.
Jared Leto
While many paid homage to Karl Lagerfeld’s time with Chanel, Chloe and more, Jared Leto focused on the designer’s bond with his beloved cat Choupette. A bonus point for that but Leto's full-body cat costume, which had the signature white fur and blue eyes of Choupette, ended up looking a bit bizarre. But he later switched to a black ensemble, featuring a silver neckline.
Lil Nas X
With a metallic thong, silver body paint, bejeweled crystals, pearls from head to toe, and a face mask to match, the ‘Old Town Road’ pop star left little to the imagination. Lil Nas X surely looked unrecognizable and uncanny in the work of makeup artist Pat McGrath in collaboration with Dior Men. And those platform heels surely scored marks as he broke boundaries. But just a silver thong didn’t do justice to the fashion event of the year.
Bad Bunny
Bad Bunny always knows how to turn heads but somehow, he missed it this time. Wearing an all-white suit with a daring cutout on the back, and a custom Jacquemus creation, the artist paired the suit with pearl stud earrings and a silver chain necklace. But what seemed odd was the extended rosette train.
Lizzo
The ‘About Damn Time’ singer made her way to the red carpet wearing a custom black Chanel gown that featured a beaded pearl corset on top. To add even more drama, she opted for a soft eye and neutral lip but went for a curly messy bun style for her hair. She did appear more at ease on the carpet but certainly didn’t stand out among other looks.
Rami Malek
Wearing a Prada and Cartier creation, Rami Malek kept his cool but ended up looking more like a chef. He made a case for minimalism by opting for a white vest and black pants and paired the look with jewels by Cartier. However, the look was surely a letdown!
