'Not the mid gala': Internet unbothered as Anna Wintour confirms romance with Bill Nighy on Met Gala 2023 red carpet
NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: 'Vogue' editor-in-chief Anna Wintour confirmed her relationship as she arrived at the Met Gala 2023 on Monday, May 1, 2023, arm in arm with the British actor Bill Nighy. After several months of rumors about the relationship, the 'Love Actually' actor, 73, and the Vogue titan, 73, showed up at the biggest night in fashion together. Dating rumors about the two began to circulate when Wintour and Nighy went on several romantic dinner dates in Italy in 2021.
Wintour, who was wearing a patterned Chanel couture dress, held Nighy's arm as they up the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art to the elite event. The 73-year-old 'Love Actually' actor went for a timeless style for the evening, honoring the late Karl Lagerfeld, donning a dark suit, a blue tie, and a white shirt, as reported by People.

The new Brit couple in town
The couple, both Brits, initially caused a stir in December when they were spotted holding hands at a New York screening of Bill Nighy's Oscar-nominated movie 'Living'. Friends of Wintour said in a statement to New York Post on Monday that they are "thrilled" that the fashion icon would "finally" walk the red carpet alongside Nighy.
Since Wintour has chaired or co-chaired the renowned fashion event since 1995, it was special that she decided to make her love affair with Nighy public at the Met Gala. A famously guarded Wintour was once observed joyfully whispering in the Nighy's ear as she grasped at his hand on the red carpet.
'Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty'
Wintour's multi-tiered gown featured shimmering silver accents and swirly gold and purple patterns. She added silver strappy heels to the outfit. She clung persistently to her lover's arm as they posed for photographs. The 2023 Met Gala's theme called "Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty" pays tribute to the late German fashion designer who served as Chanel's creative director until his death in 2019. The year's theme will also be accompanied by a dress code, which will read, "In honor of Karl."
Relationship history of Wintour and Nighy
Since 2015, Wintour and Nighy have been spotted together at various fashion events, theaters, and restaurants, indicating that they have known each other for a long time. In the summer of 2021, they were first linked romantically after being spotted on several dates in Rome. On one occasion, the couple was spotted cuddling before settling down to eat outside.
Nighy also gave Wintour roses during another dinner, which was captured on camera. Following Wintour's split from Shelby Bryan, her partner of 16 years, in October 2020, the couple reportedly grew close, as reported by Daily Mail.
The Conde Nast powerhouse was married to physician David Shaffer from 1984 to 1999 and they have two children together. She then began a long-lasting relationship with investor Bryan, which lasted till 2020. Nighy, in the meantime, dated English actress Diana Quick from 1982 to 2008. Since then, he has avoided talking about his personal life.
'The queen and a man'
The Internet seemed to find the new Brit couple attractive; however, they found Wintour's outfit for the night not so glamourous given the elite Karl Lagerfeld theme. One Twitter user wrote, "The queen and a man." A second user wrote, "I will never understand how she is the inspiration for miranda priestly when she never serves."
One Twitter user quipped, "Very curious what menu ordering is like with these two." Another one chimed in, "This is the met gala not the mid gala they need to GO HOME." Someone else questioned, "What can we expect from the celebs when Miss Wintour herself doesn't bother to put work on her fit??" Another one snarked in, "She looks like she's floating"
