Met Gala 2022 best dressed stars: Blake Lively, Kim Kardashian and Kaia Gerber rule the red carpet
Just months after the Met Gala's grand return in 2021, it is time yet again for fashion's biggest night. The Met Gala 2022 is here and in full swing. This year’s ceremony took place on May 2– a return to the event’s traditional first Monday in May slot after two years of Covid chaos.
The theme of the event was 'Gilded Glamour,' this year's theme takes inspiration from the cultural shift experienced in the United States, but more specifically in New York City. Rich fabrics, shiny embellishments, and gold details immediately come to mind. Some celebrities were naturally going to take it literally and come in period-inspired gowns from the age of extravagant wealth among American industrialists from the 1870s through the 1920s. Others came gilded in golden gowns, as the word’s definition is “covered thinly with gold leaf or gold paint.”

The chairpersons of the 2022 Met Gala were actress Blake Lively, her actor husband Ryan Reynolds, actress and director Regina King and actor and playwright Lin-Manuel Miranda. The Met Gala, is considered by many as the 'Super Bowl of celebrity red carpets' so how did your favorite celebs fare? Let's take a look at which celebrities aced the fashion quotient at The Met’s famous front steps.
BEST DRESSED CELEBS OF MET GALA 2022
BLAKE LIVELY
Blake Lively hit the red carpet wearing a breathtaking Atelier Versace gown befitting the 'gilded glamour' dressing prompt. She wore a strapless copper-colored gown with matching opera gloves by Versace. The dress, which featured art deco-inspired metallic beading, was literally tied up with a bow that fanned out into a massive train. Matching crystal-encrusted dangler earrings and a tiara on her sleek hairdo made her look like an absolute diva. For her makeup, done by Kristofer Buckle, she kept things soft and simple.
BILLIE EILISH
Billie Eilish graced the red carpet in a pale green and cream silk corset gown by Gucci that featured lacework on the sleeves, a deep square-cut neckline and tulle floral applique work on the back. A crystal-adorned black choker that amped up the edginess of her look and a messy-chic updo flaunting curtain bangs completed her gorgeous look. Her makeup was edgy and on-point giving her a rebellious young heiress vibe. She may be one of the few to actually follow the theme at the Met Gala but was in dangerous territory of slipping into the worst dressed lot thanks to the big floral detailing in front. After receiving mixed responses for her oversized ruffled gown at the Oscars and for the offbeat trench coat dress at the Grammys, she set the red carpet on fire.
SHAWN MENDES
Mendes walked the carpet in a Tommy Hilfiger red and navy coat with his initials embroidered on the inner lining. The 23-year-old musician later removed the coat to reveal an equally sleek navy suit, which he completed with a matching turtleneck and nail polish. His nails also feature the Tommy Hilfiger logo, which is the designer he is wearing for the fashion event. The nail look was created using CND by Betina Goldstein. Mendes certainly was serving some 'Bridgerton' vibes.
JANELLE MONAE
Janelle Monae struck a pose in a sweeping sparkly black gown by Ralph Lauren with a circular train. The backless piece gained added glamor from a built-in headpiece that wrapped around Monae’s head, covered in glittering silver crystals. Completing her ensemble were two large matching cuff bracelets for added glamor – plus a bold red lip and matching sparkly manicure. Monae’s heels were hidden beneath her long skirt. However, it’s likely she wore a metallic, neutral or coordinating pair of sandals, pumps or boots for the occasion.
KACEY MUSGRAVES
Styled by Erica Cloud, the country music star hit the red carpet wearing a floor-length black Moschino gown with stunning colorful embellishments and a bow across the plunging neckline. She was the essence of Gilded Age glamor with a black feather fan, black gloves, and plenty of diamonds. Makeup artist Moani Lee for Byredo gave Musgraves a simple winged eyeliner look with pale pink lips and a strong contour. Her bang was split down the middle and the rest of her hair was pulled back in an elegant updo.
VANESSA HUDGENS
The actress wore a completely sheer Moschino ball gown designed by Jeremy Scott. The see-through design featured embroidery on the bodice, puff sleeves and a high neckline. Hudgens also went big on the bling, wearing a diamond cuff bracelet, drop earrings and a number of dazzling rings. For her Met Gala glam, the star's hair, completed by hairstylist Danielle Priano, was pulled into a braided updo and gemstones lined select sections of her hair. She wore a glossy pink lip and shimmering eye makeup, accented with a slightly sharp eye wing.
MAUDE APATOW
The 'Euphoria' star walked the red carpet at her first Met Gala in a darkly sophisticated Old Hollywood look: sleek hair waves, a diamond choker, and crimson lipstick. The sheer dress is definitely grown up, but the embellishments keep it from being too revealing. To complete the look, she wore a diamond choker and a dark red lip.
KAIA GERBER
Kaia Gerber turned heads wearing a semi-sheer gown with cutout details along the bodice by Alexander McQueen. Her look featured touches of beaded fringe and floral motifs. She finished off the look with understated accessories: silver sandals, black nail polish, and beaded hair barrettes. The gown alone had Studio 54 vibes, but her hair took the '70s references to the next level. Instead of her usual shoulder-length straight cut, the model wore waist-length, voluminous curls.
KIM KARDASHIAN
Kardashian sparkled up the Met steps in the exact Jean Louis gown Monroe wore to sing “Happy Birthday, Mr. President” to John F. Kennedy during his 45th birthday celebration at Madison Square Garden in 1962. The reality TV star paired the ensemble with blonde hair and diamond earrings. The dress is owned not by Kardashian herself but by Ripley's Believe It Or Not museum, who loaned it to Kardashian. She is believed to have changed out of it soon after leaving the red carpet, she wouldn't want to spill pizza sauce on this number, would she?
ALICIA KEYS
The 'Empire State of Mind' singer arrived on the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in a silver gown and black cape embroidered with the Manhattan skyline by Ralph Lauren. Keys wore Tiffany & Co. Archives iridium-platinum earrings with diamonds and emeralds and a Tiffany & Co. Archives bracelet in gold and platinum with diamonds, emeralds and Montana sapphires. Keys, who is known to not wear any makeup, also debuted her new makeup collection under her wellness brand, Keys Soulcare, at the Met Gala.
