What happened on the Lufthansa flight?

Lufthansa Flight 469 was en route from Austin, Texas, to Frankfurt, Germany, on Wednesday when it encountered severe turbulence. When the flight was at an altitude of 37,000 feet over Tennessee, the flight crew declared "severe turbulence" and diverted to Dulles International Airport for an emergency landing, People reports. Around 9.10 pm Wednesday, the plane landed at Dulles Airport "without incident." The FAA is still investigating the cause of the incident. Seven passengers were hospitalized for injuries. No fatalities were reported.

Past incidents

In December 2022, a similar incident occurred when Hawaiian Airlines Flight 35 hit an unstable air pocket 30 minutes before landing in Honolulu. Thirty-six passengers, including a 14-month-old baby, were injured in the incident. After reporting "severe turbulence" on the morning of December 18, the plane landed at Daniel K Inouye International Airport at about 11.00 am. The aircraft was unable to land. Twenty of the injured passengers and crew members were taken to nearby medical centers for treatment.

The flight was an Airbus 330 and was carrying 278 passengers, eight crew members and two pilots in its journey from Phoenix, Arizona to Honoloulu, Hawaii. After the incident, on December 18, Hawaiian Airlines issued a statement, "Hawaiian Airlines is continuing to support the 17 passengers and three crew members who sustained injuries today after Flight 35 from Phoenix to Honolulu encountered severe turbulence." At that time, the airline was also found to make a statement to make "a thorough inspection of the aircraft before returning it to service," reported CNN.
