‘I’m really lucky’: Inside Marvel stars Gemma Chan and Dominic Cooper’s low-key relationship of 4 years
Gemma Chan, who was recently spotted with Dominic Cooper, in the stands on Day 10 of Wimbledon, has opened up on her four-year relationship with Cooper, who played young Howard Stark in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
In an interview with Helena Lee of Harper’s Bazaar, Chan, who portrayed Minn-Erva in ‘Captain Marvel’, said: “I think I’m so fortunate to be in a relationship where we can talk about anything." Talking about fame, and the responsibility she felt to speak out on behalf of the Asian communities during the pandemic, she said, "Dom was very understanding and empathetic. I was quite open about how I was feeling during that time, and he was just incredibly supportive. I definitely didn’t feel I had to shoulder everything on my own. I’m really, really lucky."

Chan also spoke about the cultural issues inherent in the film industry. She admitted by saying, "It’s really difficult in my industry to speak up, with the power structures that are there. I know you can be penalized in a way that means your livelihood has gone. Even if you try to do the right thing, speaking up against bad behavior, all it takes is someone to interpret what you say the wrong way or decide that you’re trouble... It’s a hierarchical, word-of-mouth kind of industry where, traditionally, bad behaviors have been indulged. There’s a lot of fear. It’s hard to change that culture. It takes years."
Gemma Chan, Dominic Cooper's low-key relationship
In an interview with Elle last year in January, Chan expressed that she chooses to keep things private. She said, “Over 10 years, you learn the importance of privacy, what you choose to share and what you don’t. When you start out, you don’t even know what is important to keep for yourself — I didn’t anyway — whereas now I think there are certain things that I absolutely know, ‘That’s mine and it’s private.’ For me, my comfort level is to have a clear distinction between what is for me and what I’m happy to talk about.”
In August 2021, in an interview with British Vogue, Chan shared details about how she and Cooper kept busy during quarantine by volunteering for Cook-19 and delivering meals to NHS frontline workers in London. “We were just the guys who turned up with the flapjacks and the food. The porters would recognize us, but just in terms of, ‘Oh, it’s you guys – the food couriers who sometimes had stolen a sausage roll or two," she said.
Chan and Cooper, who starred together in 2017's 'Stratton,' first sparked dating rumors when they were spotted vacationing together in Spain in August 2018, and four months later, they made their first public appearance as a couple at the Fashion Awards in London, according to US Magazine. Neither of them shares much on their social media accounts. However, they do drop occasional pictures together, just like this one.
