Macaulay Culkin's comeback: 'American Horror Story' could be the best thing to happen to him since 'Home Alone'
'American Horror Story' fans were thrilled this week after Ryan Murphy announced the cast for the upcoming season of his very successful horror franchise but no one could have prepared them for an unprecedented addition — that of 'Home Alone' star Macaulay Culkin.
Culkin will test the waters of Murphy's universe alongside 'AHS' alumni Kathy Bates, Sarah Paulson, Leslie Grossman, Billie Lourd, Evan Peters, Adina Porter, Lily Rabe, Angelica Ross and Finn Wittrock. Although he has been on television in the recent past with shows such as Hulu's 'Dollface' and 'Robot Chicken', he has had nothing more than just guest appearances. 'American Horror Story' could just be the best thing to happen to Culkin since being left alone by his family on Christmas.
As much as our hearts are set aflutter to see Peters come back home to us along with Paulson and Bates who were notably absent from '1984', Murphy's tribute to the slasher genre, it is absolutely enthralling to think about what Culkin will bring to the table. His character has not been announced and we know Murphy will leave breadcrumbs all the way till the season premiere, but we know that we will be hooked even if he doesn't. In a way, this casting is like the meeting place of two fandoms and we are here for it.
This could be Culkin's big break on television for a number of reasons. He is obviously talented, but Murphy's series has a way of leaving its characters and actors permanently tattooed in the viewer's mind even if you didn't know they could act. Think Lady Gaga's Countess in 'AHS: Hotel'. Who knew Gaga could do so much more than 'Poker Face' and do it while being so riveting. The series itself is so popular that it would look brilliant in the now-adult Culkin's acting resume.
Moreover, the variety that each season brings will also give him a chance to explore something he probably hasn't before. The show has a habit of bringing back its cast for more than just one season. Just look at Rabe or even newcomer Lourd, who was brought back after 'AHS: Apocalypse' to 'AHS: 1984' and now to the unnamed Season 10. If this all goes well, we could be seeing more of Culkin in the future.
At the height of his fame, Culkin was regarded as the most successful child actor since Shirley Temple and was on every list that mattered of "successful child stars". He has been podcasting and singing for his underground comedy rock band while also running a website called Bunny Ears, but all of that couldn't be as great for his career as 'American Horror Story'. Here is hoping Culkin gets the bandits one more time.
