'He had wild times': Owner of MacCarthy's Bar which barred Colin Farell from entering for being 'outrageous' lifts ban after 25 years
COUNTY CORK, IRELAND: An Irish pub that previously forbade Colin Farrell from entering due to his supposed "outrageous behavior" is now gladly reopening its doors to him. Despite the Oscar-nominated actor's 1997 ban from the pub, publican Adrienne MacCarthy has spoken of their close bond that has since grown, in part due to his recent return to Castletownbere, County Cork.
Having "grown sick" of his antics over a three-month period, Adrienne had initially banned the then-19-year-old from 'MacCarthy's Bar' in Cork, Ireland, in the 1990s. However, the 46-year-old came back a few years later while filming 'Ondine' in 2009 while Adrienne was reportedly cleaning out the airing cupboard. The pair have developed a close bond since then and she ultimately lifted the ban on Farrell.

'That’s it, you’re out!'
"He was new out of acting school," said Adrienne, recalling his 12-week stint in Cork. "He had wild times, and at 19, we’re all wild and misbehave. He was outrageous, so I had enough and said, 'That’s it, you’re out!'" she added, as per NY Post. When Farrell went to the location in 2009, he apparently ran into Adrienne, who was persuaded to lift the prohibition. "He wanted to see if the bar was the same, and if the pugs are still here," she said. "Colin said he couldn’t quite remember being barred, but we had a laugh about it."
The two actually grew close and according to Adrienne, they "understand each other now." "He’s just normal and down-to-earth," she gushed of the actor, who was a "wild child" at his young age. "Nowadays he’s more interested in pilates, yoga, and healthy living. We’re proud of him no matter what," she added.
'I was a disaster'
The celebrity, who sought rehab in 2006 due to a drug and alcohol addiction, has been sober for almost 17 years. He previously discussed the toll that his extreme partying had on him. He revealed how he needed 56 takes to get one line right while filming for 'Minority Report' with Tom Cruise in 2002. Colin told The Mirror in 2019, "The line was, 'I’m sure you’ve all grasped the fundamental paradoxical pre-crime methodology.' I only know it now, still, 16 years later because it caused so much panic and anxiety. It should be on my tombstone. My sister was on the set that day and she had to leave the set after 56 takes. I was a disaster."
Colin Farrell's Achievements
The Irish actor, whose filmography includes 'In Bruges' and 'The Gentlemen', is nominated for Best Actor at the Oscars for his performance as a friend who is spurned in 'The Banshees of Inisherin'. It is his first Oscar nomination. His role in the film also earned him a Desert Palm Achievement Award and a Golden Globe. During the Golden Globe-winning speech, Farrell expressed gratitude for director Martin McDonagh, who also directed him in 2008's 'In Bruges', for which the star previously won the same award.
The actor made appearances in 'Thirteen Lives' and 'The Batman' last year; in the latter, he played the villain, a character he will return to in the upcoming HBO Max series 'The Penguin'. Although there hasn't been a launch date specified, the movie will start production this month, as per reports.
