MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA: Kyle Farmer, the shortstop for the Minnesota Twins, was hit in the face by a 92-mph pitch thrown by Lucas Giolito of the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday, April 12. Despite the severity of the impact, the 32-year-old infielder was able to walk off the field on his own. Giolito was visibly shaken after the incident, covering his own face in horror upon seeing the impact.

"Goodness gracious," exclaimed White Sox announcer Steve Stone. The Twins' manager Rocco Baldelli and the team's training staff immediately rushed to Farmer's aid. The player remained face down on the ground for several minutes as the team attended to him. Eventually, he stood up with a towel covering his face and walked slowly to the dugout with his head hunched down.

According to Baldelli, Farmer was scheduled for surgery after the game, but it seemed that he had not sustained any fractures to his face from the 92 mph pitch. It was "probably some sort of miracle that that’s the case," he said, as per CNN Sports. Baldelli described the game as "one of the more difficult days that you’re going to have at a ballpark. You just can’t stop thinking about him and what he’s gone through and what he’s about to go through."

Willi Castro was the pinch runner for Kyle Farmer

Farmer's initial diagnosis was announced as a jaw injury when the pitch struck him and knocked him to the dirt, causing him to leave the game. Willi Castro came in as a pinch-runner for Farmer, who was acquired in an offseason trade with Cincinnati. He has started seven of 12 games for the Twins and has filled in at second base for Jorge Polanco, and more recently at shortstop for Carlos Correa. The Twins beat the Sox 3-1.

Lucas Giolito was 'rattled' after the strike

Meanwhile, Giolito was quoted by MLB, saying that he never intended to hit anyone. "It’s something that obviously I feel very, very bad about," Giolito said. "It will rattle you in the moment, but you have to do what you can to regain focus in the situation, continue to make good pitches, get out of the situation. And maintain that focus throughout the rest of the game."
