PHOENIX, ARIZONA: Pictures of Mel Gibson and Kari Lake hanging out together have gone viral on social media. Trolls were quick to target the pair as Lake posted the photos on her official Facebook page, captioning them, "Thank God for the creative genius of Mel Gibson. Without him there would be wry few movies for me to enjoy. God Bless you, Mel."

Last year, Lake was defeated after Democratic nominee Katie Hobbs won the race for governor of Arizona. At the time, Hobbs said she did not wish to give the GOP nominee the chance to spread conspiracy theories and accused Lake of being “only interested in creating a spectacle".

Gibson and Lake are now drawing flak for the pictures showing them hanging out together. The two of them have been at the center of several controversies in the past, and the photos have renewed the conversation around them.

Mel Gibson and Kari Lake's controversies

Gibson has been blasted several times for alleged antisemitic comments. His 2004 film, 'The Passion of the Christ', had been criticized for being antisemitic and The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) released a statement ahead of its release, saying, "The Passion could likely falsify history and fuel the animus of those who hate Jews." In 2006, he was forced to apologize to a Los Angeles police officer who accused the actor of abusing him during an arrest, saying, "the Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world."

Gibson was criticized a few years ago after leaked audio revealed he launched into a racist and sexist rant against his ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva during an argument. He was heard saying, "You go out in public and it's a f***ing embarrassment to me. You look like a f***ing pig in heat and if you get raped by a pack of (n-word) it will be your fault." He was accused of downplaying the number of Jews murdered in the Holocaust during an interview. Gibson shocked fans when he announced he will play a major role in 'Rothchild', a film chronicling how a black sheep attempted to return the good graces of a rich Jewish family, which itself is based on the real-life Rothschild family of bankers.

Kari Lake began her media career in the early 1990s but later stepped down and announced her gubernatorial candidacy. She previously won the Republican nomination with the endorsement of former president Donald Trump. Lake's campaign was marked by several controversies. She was accused of promoting false claims of Trump winning the 2020 presidential election. She also allegedly called for the imprisonment of people who accepted Trump's defeat, including Hobbs. Lake was slammed after she endorsed Doug Mastriano, who is allegedly known for his ties to antisemites and white supremacists.

Many took to social media to troll the pair, with one user saying, "Deeply saddened, but not shocked, to see actor/director Mel Gibson connecting with dangerous anti-American, pretend Christian, grifter Kari Lake. Mel’s life and career arc continue to be a heartbreaking mystery — and warning — to me. Kari is not a mystery at all, however." Another wrote, "Mel Gibson is hanging out with Kari Lake. (they are both not governor of Arizona)," one user joked, while another wrote, "Omg! Back in the 80s, Mel was one of the most gorgeous men on the face of the earth. In time, we discovered he was a Raging Alcoholic, Anti-Semite, Abuser. Just when you thought there was no way for him to go but up, he starts hanging out with Kari."
