'Haven't slept in days': Katy Perry gives 'American Idol' fans a sneak peek into her life amid backlash
BRENTWOOD, CALIFORNIA: Katy Perry stated that she went to film an episode of 'American Idol' on little sleep amid backlash from fans. Backstage on the set of 'American Idol,' Katy began behaving terribly sleep-deprived.
When 'American Idol' returned to ABC in 2018, it featured a new judging panel that included Katy, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie. It was a new network for the show, but over the past few months, the 'Teenage Dream' singer has come under fire for harsh criticism, drawing comparisons to the original 'mean' judge, Simon Cowell. Simon was noted for his severe evaluations and reactions to contestants, and he was labeled "the mean one" by fellow original judges Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson. Katy's criticism appears to be more severe than Simon's.

'Minutes before the show'
On her Instagram account, the pop diva uploaded a behind-the-scenes video in which she rants about zoo animals and obtaining 'that D.' The video revealed black-and-white footage of the singer putting up her cosmetics for filming in her dressing area. Katy rose up, placed a 'vitamin' in her mouth, and made an odd squashed face after she was clothed and ready to leave.
She then said, "So, you wanna be a star?! Well, then you better take your vitamins. Cause I haven't slept in days," she laughed before taking a gulp of water.
"I have literally already been to the zoo this morning," the judge added. "I've been up since six. Fed the giraffes. Hung out with the lions. Saw the gorillas. There are no metaphors. I literally went to the zoo."
She continued to guzzle from her water bottle before looking in the mirror and said, "Here we go. Pop star. Pop star. Pop star. Pop star."
Katy closed her eyes and turned her head towards the light as she went out of the building and into the sunlight. The hitmaker repeated, "Get that D," eleven times before someone finally asked her to clarify, and she yelled, "Vitamin D!"
The video was captioned by Katy, "Minutes before the show."
Backlash from fans
Idol viewers blasted the judges over the weekend for being too lenient on hopefuls on the April 30 episode. Haven Madison grabbed the stage early in the evening to perform her rendition of Bon Jovi's 'Livin' on a Prayer'. Haven worked the stage and gave her everything to the performance, but the audience at home seemed unimpressed.
The judges, on the other hand, were impressed. In fact, when she had finished, Lionel and Luke were cheering loudly, while Katy grabbed her face in disbelief. "Well, you done traded in your Flintstones vitamins for some confidence vitamins. I don't know who you are, but I'm nervous, I have sweaty palms, I'm like excited, I'm threatened. That's all great things. You're the next big pop star as far as this performance."
Luke and Lionel both praised her, with the country singer describing her as a future "massive star."
Fans who were watching strongly disagreed, believing that the judges were too easy on Haven and the competitors who performed before her. Haven eventually made it into the Top 10.
'American Idol' Season 21 airs every Sunday and Monday at 8 pm ET on ABC.
