Kathryn Kates died on Saturday, January 22 in Florida at the age of 73. Kathryn was a New York native and had a few minor appearances in the early 1980s before starring in prominent shows like 'Matlock', 'Thunder Alley', and 'Seinfeld'.

She had appeared on shows such as 'Caroline in the City', 'Lizzie McGuire', 'Judging Amy', 'Rescue Me', and others throughout the 1990s and into the twenty-first century. She is arguably most recognized for her recurrent parts on prominent shows like 'Orange Is the New Black', where she played Amy Kanter-Bloom, Jason Biggs' mother. She also appeared in 'Shades of Blue' where she played Mrs Saperstein, the mother of Detective David Saperstein, and in 'Law & Order: Special Victims Unit' Kathryn essayed the role of Judge Marlene Simons.

Kathryn earned Best Actress at the NYCTV Festival for her portrayal in the short film 'Welcome to Sarajevo', which was one of her most recent roles. She had even worked as an understudy in 'Significant Other' for several years and appeared in a number of Off-Broadway productions. She became a founding member of the Colony Theatre in Los Angeles, where she worked for nearly 25 years in a variety of offstage capacities. 

How did Kathryn die?

Kathryn was suffering from cancer and passed away gently in the company of her friends and family. Her representatives at Headline Talent Agency released a statement after her death. “Kathryn has been our client for many years, and we have grown much closer to her in this last year since she knew of her cancer returning,” the statement read. “She was always incredibly brave and wise and approached every role with the greatest of passion. She will be greatly missed,” the statement concluded. 

Many Twitter users took to social media to mourn her death. One tweet read, "I am so upset to hear about the passing of Kathryn Kates, an actress of tremendous empathy, vigor and joy. She played 'Sheyne' in the 2018 reading of my musical 'Rubble Rubble.' She was so kind to me, and I always assumed we’d make something together again. I will miss her."



 

Another tweet read, "The incredible @kathrynjkates passed away. Kathryn Kates was someone I knew via my daughter having worked with her & we kept in touch. I greatly admired her work & she knew it. I told her many times and I’m glad I did - outspoken, true, caring, memorable actress in every part." "This gorgeous heart. This incredible force. Love you #KathrynKates," wrote a fan.
