Viral video shows 'Karen' mom kicking out her mentally-ill son from home
A TikTok video about a mother kicking out her own son from her house has gone viral. It was posted on September 29 by TikTok user @borderlineimage. The user said that his mother kicked him out of her house two years ago while he was in outpatient treatment for both bipolar and borderline personality disorders.
In the video, the user, who has more than 18,000 followers, can be seen asking his mother, “Which bag is my social and my passport in?” The mother in turn responds with, “Figure it out.” The TikTok user then turns the camera on himself and says that if he couldn’t find the possessions he needed he would call the police.

The video reportedly has received more than 1.9 million views. It was captioned “Karen Mom kicks out mentally ill son going through outpatient treatment during a mental health crisis. Reportedly, in a follow-up video, the TikTok user @borderlineimage said that his mother’s actions in the video resulted in him being homeless. “Just remember that you are worth it,” he says in the video. “No matter how low you are in life, you can always pick yourself back up.”
The TikTok user also said in the caption of his video that he was hoping to share mental health tips and resources on his TikTok account. In his bio, he identifies as having both BPD and schizoaffective disorder. “I wanted to over the course of time periodically tell the story of how I got back on my feet,” @borderlineimage said in yet another follow-up video. “I posted it so that I could remember that I got myself out of it.” He also said he did not hate his mother, and that he hoped she would get help herself. The user @borderlineimage also said that while he was “still angry,” he was also “trying to let go and be better.”
As per the Mayo Clinic, Borderline Personality Disorder is a mental health disorder that impacts the way one thinks and feels about themselves and others, causing problems functioning in everyday life. It includes self-image issues, difficulty managing emotions and behavior, and a pattern of unstable relationships. With borderline personality disorder, one suffers from an intense fear of abandonment or instability. The Mayo Clinic also states that Bipolar Disorder causes extreme mood swings that include emotional highs (mania or hypomania) and lows (depression). These mood swings can affect sleep, energy, activity, judgment, behavior, and the ability to think clearly.
In the comments section of the TikTok videos, many sympathized with the user and slammed the mother. “People really need to learn. BPD is one of the hardest mental illnesses to live with because doctors don’t even understand why we think the way we do,” commented one user. Another said, “BPD is caused by severe emotional trauma and neglect. It’s clear to see who did this to this poor guy.” One person also wrote, “Dealing with a family member with mental disorders is extremely draining. Sometimes we have to set boundaries for our own sanity.”
