Kanye West's outspoken support and admiration for President Donald J Trump has made him a divisive figure in the African-American community, but if new reports are to be believed, it was all an act to benefit Black people. According to a now-deleted post from High Snobiety, the rapper has only been wearing the instantly-recognizable red "Make America Great Again" hats in public to win the favor of the president and help people get out of jail.

For proof, the account pointed to an interview by Leonard Harris, better known by his stage name GLC, who has featured in songs in two of Kanye's albums and is now signed on to the 'Stronger' hitmaker's G.O.O.D music label. Speaking during a 2019 appearance on 'The Red Pill Podcast with Van Lathan,' GLC claimed that Kanye had got rid of all of his MAGA hats and had vowed to never wear them again. "Kanye actually gave me the boxes of hats," GLC had said. "He said, 'I'm never wearing these again.'"

GLC also brought up a conversation with Kanye where the rapper had explained to him why he had been so open about supporting Trump when he had previously declared that his Republican predecessor as president, George Bush, did not care about Black people.

"'Bro, I’m just telling’ you that we got that amazing woman out of jail in Florida, right?... We didn’t really get to have that meeting until I put the hat on,'" GLC recalled Kanye telling him. "So he lookin’ at like it as, more so, 'OK, I wear the hat, I get the stones thrown at me, I’ll have people hating me, but people gonna get free.'"

High Snobiety also claimed that Kanye had been inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement that has been dominating headlines in the aftermath of the Memorial Day death of George Floyd, a 46-year-old truck driver who died in the custody of four Minneapolis police officers. The page said the rapper is "back to the old Kanye" and wants to make the BLM movement a global one.

Kanye had been spotted protesting with public school students in Chicago after Floyd's death and is said to have donated $2 million to fully cover his six-year-old daughter Gianna’s tuition. He has also made separate donations to take care of legal costs for Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor’s families, and help several black-owned businesses in his hometown.

He also contradicted his assertions that he would not be gunning for the presidency until 2024, by which point Trump will have served out a second term in office, by seemingly announcing a bid for this year. "We must now realize the promise of America by trusting God, unifying our vision, and building our future. I am running for president of the United States! #2020VISION" he tweeted.

But if his recent interviews are to be believed, he is still very much a backer of Trump. In GQ's May issue, he suggested it was obvious who he would be voting for in the upcoming presidential elections. "I’m definitely voting this time and we know who I’m voting on," he had said.
