K-pop rookies Lightsum go viral among Knetz with 'Alive', fans cheer 'famous era'
K-pop girl group Lightsum are finally back with their first-ever mini-album ‘Into The Light’ after debuting in June 2021. We got the single albums ‘Vanilla’ and ‘Light a Wish’ that even made it to the top 10 of Gaon Album Charts while the title tracks ‘Vanilla’ and ‘Vivace’ went as far as to rank at #8 on Billboard World Digital Song Sales Chart, a power move for a group that just debuted. Well, with much riding on their next comeback, Lightsum has gone all out for ‘Into The Light’’ and the lead single ‘Alive’.
While Cube Entertainment’s groups BTOB and (G)I-DLE have taken K-pop by storm over the last few weeks, their new girl group Lightsum is doing pretty well on their own. The music video for ‘Alive’ crossed 5.5 million YouTube views in the first 24 hours, making it their most viewed music video. They also ranked #13 on MelOn’s female group chart and ‘Alive’ entered Bugs at #11 while trending on MelOn. Meanwhile, all of the b-sides also entered the top 100 of Bugs. The album also debuted at #16 on Worldwide iTunes and was in the top 5 of several regions like Indonesia, India, and Turkey. ‘Into The Light’ was also the fifth-highest album on Hanteo Chart on the day of its release.

Lightsum get romantic in ‘Alive’
At the same time, Lightsum was trending on Korean chat forums like Instiz where Knetz made them go viral as they applauded their comeback. Knetz made comments like “I really like the chorus of Lightsum,” “Lightsum songs are getting better and better,” and “It feels like a spoonful of girl-crush concept mixed with the new high-teen genre.” ‘Into The Light’ expands Lightsum’s storyline and their universe with the goal of bringing hope and positive light to fans. The girls experimented with the album which has two versions.
In ‘The Class’ version, Lightsum opts for a high-school teen concept with a groovy and funky element while going for sporty energy for the ‘The Team’ version of the album. The lead single ‘Alive’ takes these two concepts and creates a fun music video while singing about gen-Zs desire to be frank and honest about their feelings and challenges. The single has Lightsum’s producer’s signature groovy sound with elements of house and EDM as the song sends a message of falling in love and finally escaping the everyday mundane routine that had made life colorless.
‘A no skip album’
Fans loved the comeback as they made tweets like, “B*tch lightsum bringing back the exact sound i was missing from kpop oh my god.” Another fan said, “Lightsum finally getting their famous era.” One posted, “This is just their second comeback so it's still too early but somehow damn it's so illegal for a group with vocal focused (and THIS good) like lightsum to not be famous in South Korea insane.” Another fan cheered, “We making it out the hood.” One commented, “Lightsum’s new album is the real definition of a no skip album i swear. i keep repeating the album.”
