NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Justine Bateman, a multifaceted personality known for her work as a writer, director, and producer, recently shared her thoughts on acceptance in an exclusive interview with PEOPLE. Bateman, who is 57 years old, shed light on the pressure many women face to "fix their face" as they age, and the "irrational fear" that underlies it. She emphasized that women who embrace their natural looks tend to stand out among the crowd, including younger actresses such as Kristen Stewart.

Speaking of Stewart's unique beauty, Bateman said, "The bags under Stewart's eyes... she's young. This is just naturally on her face. It's not an age thing or anything. I think that looks super cool." Bateman also cited the example of Anjelica Huston, who became a style icon due to her distinctive nose, saying, "Just like, oh my God, that's so awesome." According to Bateman, her love for individuality stems from her fascination with films, especially those by Italian director Federico Fellini, which combined fantasy with reality. However, Bateman noted that distinctive looks are becoming rarer due in part to the influence of social media.

Societal pressure to 'Fix your face'

Former 'Family Ties' actress, Justine Bateman, has been reflecting on the societal pressures to "fix your face" as you age. During an interview with 60 Minutes Australia, she shared her perspective, saying, "I just don't give a s---. I think I look rad. I like feeling that I am a different person now than I was when I was 20. I like looking in the mirror and seeing that evidence." However, Bateman admitted that she wasn't always so accepting of her appearance, recalling a time when she became ashamed of her face due to societal pressures."Because of some of the fears I had, unrelated to my face, I decided to make them right and me wrong ... I became really ashamed of my face, ridiculously so," she added. She noted that it's troubling how people can become obsessed with reversing the natural process of aging. Bateman is currently turning her book 'Face: One Square Foot of Skin' into a film.

Bateman's thoughts on aging

During an interview with Hoda Kotb and Savannah Guthrie on the TODAY Show, actress Jason Bateman expressed her opinion on the societal pressure to look young and the fear of aging that it instills in many women. Bateman stated that the "war on aging" is an "inside job" that leads some women to doubt their appearance. She urged young women to be cautious of the messages they receive about aging, saying, "I would say to any young woman, you're being lied to. Who is making money off this? You're being lied to and you're being tricked off your path... You've got awesome things coming your way. Just stay on your path and just ride it out."

Bateman acknowledged that some people are afraid of aging because they believe it may impact their career, relationships, or overall success. However, she emphasized that this fear exists regardless of whether or not their face is changing. "I'm just somebody who got myself on the other side of what that fear was for me in particular, and I'm just sharing what worked for me. Lots of ways to get there, but for anyone who wants to get free," she explained.
