'Justice League Dark: Apokolips War': Top 5 of the wildest moments from DC Universe's apocalyptic film
Spoilers for 'Justice League Dark: Apokolips War'
'Justice League Dark: Apokolips War' just came out, bringing an end to a DC animated universe series of films that began with 'Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox.'
Capitalizing off of the buzz generated by the New 52 relaunch, the film series has built its own universe one movie at a time, each putting its own twist on classic DC Comics storylines.
With this latest movie, however, the universe goes completely off the rails, and we take a look at our top five favorite moments from this wild ride of a movie.
5. Cyborg Mera
The initial attack by the Justice League on Apokolips went terribly — many members of the League were slaughtered immediately under the attack of the Paradooms. Those who survived, however, had an arguably worse fate, as we find out when what remains of the League returns to Apokolips.
From the mist appears Mera — transformed into a cyborg by Apokolips technology. Slithering further out of the shadows, we see just how extensive that transformation is, in one of the movie's most chilling moments.
4. Lois Lane v/s Harley Quinn
Lois Lane (Rebecca Romijn) tends to leave most of the action to Superman (Jerry O'Connell), but when the world is in the end times, Lois steps up with no hesitation. Attempting to negotiate for the aid of Earth's villains, Lois not only holds her own in a sparring match with Harley Quinn (Hynden Walch) but wins the bout handily.
It's no secret that Lois Lane is a badass, but getting to see her duke it out with one of DC's most recognizable anti-heroes in a post-apocalyptic world just drives the point home with a punch.
3. Constantine runs into an ex
Before ending up with Zatanna (Camilla Luddington), John Constantine (Matt Ryan) got around, leaving a slew of exes in his wake — and he was far from picky. In a group of assembled villains, he spots an ex of his, trying to avoid their gaze.
It's a classic misdirect with great comedic effect - the ex he was worried about wasn't Harley Quinn, but King Shark (John DiMaggio). It's a hilarious acknowledgment of Constantine's bisexuality, though if we're throwing sharks into the mix, Constantine is most definitely pan.
2. Superman's heat vision upgrade
This movie goes all out. It's not enough for a climactic battle between Superman and Darkseid (Tony Todd) — Round 1 of that battle sees Superman possessed by the demon Trigon (John DiMaggio). Already a world conquerer, Trigon finds that Superman's powerful Kryptonian body to be very much to his liking.
Trigon's possession of Superman modifies the Kryptonian's body, giving him horns, a cape of hellfire and Trigon's signature extra pair of eyes. The last upgrade proves to be the most beneficial of all because twice the number of eyes means just one thing: twice the heat vision.
1. One last goodbye to the DCAMU
Though the heroes won the final battle against Darkseid, they ultimately lost the war. Their greatest heroes either slaughtered or permanently transformed, and the Earth destabilized by the loss of much of its magma core, leading to the eventual loss of billions.
Constantine realizes that this world is a lost cause — but there's another way out. He's seen the Flash's (Christopher Gorham) world of Flashpoint and knows that Barry can go into the past, and rewrite the world entirely.
It brings the DC Animated Movie Universe full circle, having begun with 'Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox.' The Flash runs to erase the DCAMU from existence entirely, and what remains of DC's heroes look out onto the horizon, one final moment of grace before they're wiped out from existence entirely.
It's a moment that's a painful mix of peace, sorrow, hope and loss — and perhaps the most beautiful end the DCAMU could have had.
