'Low-key bodyshaming': Fans slam Joy Behar for asking Ethan Hawke about 'naked' Maya Hawke music video

Joy Behar drew flak from netizens for asking Ethan Hawke about his daughter's nudity in 'Thérése' music video on 'The View'

Josephine Victoria "Joy" Behar, the famous American TV host and media personality, is clearly not having her best week. The host of ABC's daytime show 'The View' has been embroiled in controversy in light of some of her remarks on the show. If her "coming out on Thanksgiving" advice was not enough for people to question her, on July 21, 2022, Thursday, she made some remarks against Ethan Hawke's daughter, Maya Ray Thurman Hawke.

Fans slammed her for her insensitive question about the actress that they felt 'body shamed' Maya Hawke. In his latest appearance on the show, Ethan Hawke talked about his daughter and her music video for the song 'Thérése' after Joy brought it up in a rather weird fashion.

The 'Little Women' starlet is currently basking in the fame that came with the fourth season of 'Stranger Things' and Ethan spoke at length about how proud he was of his daughter and the way her career was taking her down multiple paths. When asking about Maya's different projects, Joy touched upon her music video in an off-putting manner. She emphasized how Maya appears naked in the video, saying, "The beautiful girl is also a musician, and she just released a music video for her song Thérése (is that how she says that) – in which she appears naked."

Viewers were not particularly pleased with the pointed question that seemed designed to get a reaction from Ethan. However, they were more than delighted with Ethan's quick response. Without taking a moment to breathe, Ethan replied he was more than happy about his daughter's work: "She's a full-grown woman. She can do as she pleases, she can tell her truth, she can sing her song." Several fans claimed that Ethan was a super supportive father and showed absolute class by standing by his daughter instead of saying something judgemental. One fan tweeted: "He's a good dad. Well said," while another commented, "I’m suing Ethan Hawke for giving me unrealistic expectations of fathers."

Another viewer expressed disappointment about Joy's question and said, "Joy tries to appear progressive but was low key body shaming Ethan's daughter. Do better Joy! #TheView"

Another fan tweeted, "I hate when interviewers ask these questions about someone's child. Yes, they're an adult and can do what they way. But it's like they're testing them to see if they get embarrassed."

On 'The View', Ethan said that the youth's primary role is to make art that is especially relevant to their times and environment. Even though they might "make their parents uncomfortable," he said he was happy his daughter used her moment and channelised her talents.

A Twitter user gave their thumbs up to Ethan for handling the bizarre line of questioning well, saying, "Joy what kind of tacky ass questions were those about his daughter. Gteat answet (Great Answer) Ethan #TheView"

A viewer went on to slam Joy, saying, "The answer was perfect. But I would have raised a sh*t storm on the show for asking such a crap question."

A user also went to the extent of calling out the moral policing that US media may have been doing of late. They appreciated Hawke and said, "That's called RESPECT, LOVE and not falling for such totally US puritanical bating."

On the other hand, fans have been showering praises on Maya's song, 'Thérése', and flooding the YouTube video's comment section with compliments about her lyrical genius and voice.

This is not the first time people have asked Joy to "do better." This year, in February, Joy made very insensitive comments about the Ukrainian war by saying her plans to vacation in other parts of Europe may also get affected. She also misgendered Caitlyn Jenner when she announced her campaign to run for the California gubernatorial recall election. Fans have often called out her tone-deaf comments and asked her to step down from the daytime show.
