Johnny Depp's popularity PLUNGES among Boomers and DEMOCRATS, but Gen Z still loves him
Though Johnny Depp has won against his former wife Amber Heard in the recent defamation case, his popularity has gone down – especially among baby boomers and men, as per Morning Consult trend data. Depp had sued the 36-year-old actress for writing an op-ed for The Washington Post in 2018, calling herself a survivor of domestic violence.
Heard had written in the piece titled ‘I spoke up against sexual violence — and faced our culture’s wrath. That has to change’. She wrote: “Like many women, I had been harassed and sexually assaulted by the time I was of college age. But I kept quiet — I did not expect filing complaints to bring justice. And I didn’t see myself as a victim. Then two years ago, I became a public figure representing domestic abuse, and I felt the full force of our culture’s wrath for women who speak out.”

The ‘Aquaman’ star did not name Depp in the op-ed but his legal team accused her of smearing his reputation and filed a lawsuit demanding $50 million. Heard countersued Depp, asking for $100 million. But after a more-than-a-month-long trial, the Virginia court ruled mostly in favor of the 58-year-old actor, awarding him $10.35 million while Heard only got $2 million as the jury accepted that one of her allegations was true.
Also, it was not just the court, even the majority of people seemed to be supporting the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ star while the high voltage drama was unfolding during the trial. Hashtags, like #justiceforjohnnydepp and #abusehasnogender, continued to trend as the jury examined the case. Even after Depp’s win, several A-listers sided with him and the general public went on to celebrate him on different social media platforms.
The father-of-two also took to social media to thank the jury and his fans for all the love and support. He wrote, “Truth never perishes. I hope that my quest to have the truth be told will have helped others, men or women, who have found themselves in my situation, and that those supporting them never give up.”
“Six years ago, my life, the life of my children, lives of those closest to me, and also, the lives of the people, who for many, many years have supported and believed in me were forever changed. All in the blink of an eye. And six years later, the jury gave me my life back. I am truly humbled. From the very beginning, the goal of bringing this case was to reveal the truth, regardless of the outcome. The best is yet to come and a new chapter has finally begun,” Depp had added.
But now, it seems ‘The Rum Diary’ star's popularity might be plummeting in certain demographic groups. The Morning Consult report have shown that in April, 68 percent of adults were in favor of him but in June it dipped to 56 percent. The Independent citing the data reported that “among baby boomers, Depp’s favorability rating fell from 59 per cent in April to 37 per cent in June."
Gen Z adults majorly remained loyal to him as they gave him 72 percent vote in April and 70 percent in June. There was not much difference in millennials’ vote as well because in April, 78 percent supported him while months later, 72 percent. But men’s vote was 67 percent in April while only 52 percent voted for him in June.
“Women’s views saw a smaller decrease by only nine points. The actor’s popularity took the hardest hit among Democrats, from 70 per cent to 55 per cent while independents showed a fall from 68 per cent to 55 percent. Republicans’ favorable views dropped from 65 per cent to 57 percent,” The Independent added.
