How John Callahan and Eva LaRue's perfect on-screen love story failed in real life and ended in a divorce
John Callahan became a beloved actor when he appeared in 'All My Children' and took upon the role of Edmund Grey. Though his character was filled with flaws and his story arc consisted of heartwrenching moments, people fell in love with what Callahan brought to the table.
After watching several episodes where they saw Callahan's character suffer and be disappointed, a ray of sunshine was brought into his life when the character of Maria Santos was introduced. The role was played by Eva LaRue. Santos and Grey's love story made people believe in love all over again.
Fans started falling in love with the couple and wanted more of them on-screen. Little did they know that this relationship was slowly stepping away from the script and taking over reality. Callahan and LaRue started falling for each other and the two began dating in 1995. Undoubtedly, it was the happiest news that the fans of the show had heard.
A year after dating the two decided to get married and it was a joyous occasion for all the fans as they also got married in the show. While it appeared that the script was playing in reality, the show's storyline ended on a sad note for the couple's fans as Grey dies. Despite this, fans were happy to know that the couple was still together in real life.
In 2001, the couple welcomed their daughter, Kaya. However, in 2004 they announced that they would be separating. This news hit fans hard as they expected the pair to last forever and the pair was conscious about it.
When they announced their separation, they acknowledged the outpouring love they received as a couple on the show. "We have a rather big bombshell to drop and we don't quite know how to say it," LaRue said in a statement. "John and I, after many months of separation, are confirming our split."
She continued, "All is amicable and we are both dedicated to raising Kaya in a happy, loving environment." Meanwhile, acknowledging the fans she wrote, "We want to assure all the [Edmund and Maria] fans that we are dedicated to protecting these characters we love so dearly. We have always looked out for each other, and nothing will ever change that. So far we're excited about the way the new story is going."
Staying true to their words, the pair stayed in good relation with each other until Callahan died on Saturday, March 28, 2020, after suffering a stroke. His death shocked the industry and left LaRue and their daughter Kaya devastated.
LaRue took to her social media to mourn the loss of her ex-husband as she shared a series of pictures. While the two failed to have a relationship that could last forever, they made sure that they took parenting seriously and were there for their daughter.
