First Lady Jill Biden sparked an uproar on social media after appearing to mock her husband's repeated fumbles of referring to Kamala Harris as the "President" of the United States.

The First Lady introduced Vice President Kamala Harris as the "President" during a Black History Month celebration event at the White House on Monday, February 28. Realizing her mix-up, she claimed she was joking after correcting herself. Her remarks came as Russian President Vladimir Putin amped up his attack on Ukraine by unleashing a series of vacuum bombs and putting his nuclear deterrence teams on alert.

'Suck it up!': Jill Biden slammed for saying being the first lady is a hard job

Jill Biden began with introductory remarks for Vice President Harris at the White House event on Monday. "As many of you know, our vice president's historic path to the White House began before she could even walk, marching with her parents in the Civil Rights movement, or at least being pushed in a stroller. Since then, she has dedicated her life to pursuing justice and opportunity for all," she said. "She is a partner to Joe, especially on issues like voting rights, and is proud to be the first, but not the last," the First Lady added.

Jill then introduced Harris as the "President of the United States", before quickly backtracking her statement. "Ladies and gentlemen, the president of – the vice president of the United States," the first lady said. “I just said that to make you laugh," she added. The event was attended by prominent Black leaders, including Rev Jesse Jackson, MSNBC host Rev Al Sharpton, and members of the Congressional Black Caucus including Reps James C Clyburn, among others.

The FLOTUS was excoriated on social media, with many wondering who really was "in charge" at the White House.

"Just Like Her Husband, Watch as US First Lady, Jill Biden, Calls Kamala Harris President of The United States. Who Is Really in Charge in The White House? #TableShaker," author Reno Omokri tweeted.

"How many times are they going to “accidentally” refer to Kamala Harris as the President," conservative activist Benny Johnson added.

"Does ANYONE think Joe is President? What’s going on here?" Fox News host Sean Hannity asked.

"Joe Biden just sat and watched," writer and producer Kyle Becker noted.

"Now BOTH Joe & Jill Biden think Kamala is the President. Oh boy," one Twitter user wrote.

President Biden himself has referred to Harris as the president on multiple occasions, most recently during an appearance in January to commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. "Last week, President Harris and I stood on the United States Capitol," he said while giving a speech at the Atlanta University Center Consortium. In December, he was touting Harris's credentials during a graduation speech at the South Carolina University. “All kidding aside, of course, President Harris is a proud Howard alum,” Biden said at the time.

In March last year, Biden lauded his number two's response to Covid. "Now when President Harris and I took a virtual tour of a vaccination center in Arizona not long ago, one of the nurses on that, on that tour injecting people, giving vaccinations, said that each shot was like administering a dose of hope.” The president was unwittingly crowning Harris the next in line of succession while stating that he took the Covid vaccine to instill public confidence. "President-elect Harris took hers today for the same reason," he had said.

President Biden is slated to give his first State of the Union address on Tuesday, with a whopping 54 per cent of Americans concerned that he doesn't have the “mental sharpness it takes to serve effectively as president”, according to a recent poll by ABC News/The Washington Post.
