Janet Jackson’s Grammy award scrapped over long-standing Super Bowl ‘nipplegate’ dispute with CBS
NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Janet Jackson was reportedly slated to be honored at last week’s Grammy Awards, but the plan ultimately fizzled out because of her long-standing dispute with CBS over how they treated her in the wake of the tragic wardrobe malfunction at Super Bowl 38 in 2004.
The Recording Academy honchos initially intended to present the 56-year-old singer with a Global Impact Award at a pre-Grammys event with the Black Music Collective but Jackson was unable to attend the event owing to schedule issues, TMZ reported. The Academy then discussed presenting Jackson with the honor during the main broadcast but that sparked another problem as CBS never apologised to the singer for blacklisting her after the infamous ‘nipplegate’ incident at Super Bowl 38 in 2004.

Why did Janet Jackson reject her Grammy award?
During the Super Bowl 38 halftime show, Jackson was performing with Justin Timberlake on his iconic 'Rock Your Body'. As the act came to its climax, Timberlake reached across the singer and ripped away the right cup of her rubber Alexander McQueen bustier, exposing her right breast on live TV to 100 million viewers. Later, Jackson's staff said that Timberlake was simply supposed to remove the rubber portion of the outfit but he went too far, Grazia Magazine reported.
Even though it was Timberlake, who tore the top, the network blamed Jackson for the controversial incident and pulled out her Grammy invitee. It has been 19 years since the incident took place but CBS has never apologized for their behaviour with Jackson. Now, when the Academy approached the singer for receiving the honor, she reportedly sought some form of an apology or acknowledgment of how they treated her in the aftermath of the wardrobe malfunction.

Her team and Grammy organizers even tried to find a way for CBS to apologize but they failed. Ultimately, the talks proved to be too complicated and Jackson didn't even receive the award. The 'Pleasure Principle' hit-maker didn’t even attend the Grammys, in fact, she hasn't attended the prestigious event in many years.
Who received the Global Impact Award?
Following Janet’s rejection, the Global Impact award was accepted by Dr. Dre with Missy Elliot, Lil Wayne, and music executive Sylvia Rhone also accepting the award. The honorees received the renamed award for their personal and professional achievements in the music industry. During the acceptance speech, Wayne thanked his mother, the mothers of his children, and his kids. “Where I’m from, New Orleans, you’re not supposed to do this,” the five-time Grammy winner continued. “Where I’m from, I walked into my momma's room when I was 14, she asked me for a kid, because my dad was killed and her son had just blown up and went on his first tour.”
