Is Drake retiring? Rapper wants ‘graceful exit’ as he calls music industry a 'really addictive competitive space'
TORONTO, CANADA: Rapper Drake recently conjectured about making a ‘graceful exit’ from the music industry. The “In My Feelings” star recently spoke in a candid interview with Lil Yachty about retirement and the competitive nature of the music industry.
The 'Euphoria' executive producer made his debut in 2010 with his album 'Thank Me Later'. After having a dream run in his career, the ‘Back to Back’ hitmaker said, “Well, I think on a broader scale, I think I’m at the point now where I just wanna — I feel like maybe we talked about this the other day — but I feel like I’m kind of introducing the concept in my mind of a graceful exit."

In a candid conversation with Lil Yachty, which was posted on the FUTUREMOOD channel, Drake said about the competition in the industry, "I feel like a lot of people that I've watched as the years have gone on, it's a really addictive competitive space." Hinting at the addiction of competition, he mentions, "Oftentimes you're addicted to the competition itself."
However, his fans can be at peace as he is not ready for an immediate retirement yet, but wants to “continue making projects that are extremely interesting and hopefully cherished by people." The 5-times Grammy Awards winner also talked about being interested in what ‘the next generation does’. He said, “I’ll still be around to work with people or do a show here or there, but I’m not going to force myself to compete. I would love to just see what the next generation does. whenever that time is. So, I guess that’s the one thing that I want for myself really badly.”
Drake’s prolific career
After making his debut with “Thank Me Later” in 2010, he named his next album “Take Care” as he said “because I get to take my time this go-round” with his music instead of rushing like his previous one, reported Digital Spy.
After releasing 'Nothing Was the Same' in 2013, Drake released 'If You're Reading This It's Too Late' in 2015 without announcing it previously. His "Work" with Rihanna in 2016 won him in the Favorite Soul/R&B Song at American Music Awards. He also has 34 Billboard Awards to his name. He has also clocked in five Grammys with the latest being in 2023 for ‘Best Melodic Rap Performance’ where he collaborated with Future and Tems.
'Please no'
Fans reacted to his impromptu announcement with passion. While one user supported the retirement, others protested. "I honestly feel like the Big 3 are all close to retirement. They’ve literally been carrying rap music for the past 10+ years. There is no reward for them to keep going. They have no competition, music is going to , & they have nothing left to prove. They deserve their rest tbh." One Twitter user said, "Now you know the world is not ready for that." Another user wished, "I just hope he drops an album full of his old music before he goes."
