'The Devil Wears Prada 2' trailer reunites Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt with a scene-stealing Met Gala moment
The long wait is finally paying off for fans who have kept 'The Devil Wears Prada' alive through memes, quotes, and the occasional side-eye at their boss. The first full trailer for the sequel has officially dropped. 'The Devil Wears Prada 2' is no longer a rumor whispered on fashion forums. The new footage opens with Meryl Streep's Miranda Priestly attending the Met Gala in a beautiful red dress. It also reconnects viewers with Andy Sachs and Emily Charlton, and the reunion is sharp, funny, and just awkward enough to feel right. Time has passed, careers have changed, and confidence has clearly been upgraded, at least according to Emily.
In one exchange, Emily casually points out to Andy, "You've changed. You're much more confident. You kept those eyebrows, though, didn't you?" Anne Hathaway's Andy looks like someone who has lived a full life outside the Runway bubble, while Emily Blunt's Emily still delivers lines like precision strikes and is slightly terrifying in the best way. Miranda appears exactly as expected, confident and self-assured. Meanwhile, Stanley Tucci's Nigel also pops up alongside her during scenes, as per The Hollywood Reporter.
Ahead of the trailer's release, Streep, Hathaway, Blunt, and Tucci spoke with Vogue about stepping back into a universe that first took over pop culture nearly two decades ago. For Streep, "It was like going into the back of your own closet and finding something, thinking, Oh, I wonder if this still fits?" Blunt, meanwhile, joked that playing Emily again required very little adjustment on her part, maybe too little. She admitted, "It felt a lot like coming home. This character seems to be the glove that fits rather too easily for me. She's a lunatic. Maybe I should question myself on that: why it seems so easy to step back into her."
The cast also reflected on just how intense the public reaction was while filming took place in New York last summer. Crowds gathered. Phones were raised. Clips flooded social media before scenes were even finished shooting. According to Blunt, "All of this attention and obsession with the quick consumption of this movie before it's even out…in many ways is emblematic of how our industry and our lives have changed." She joked that the cast often stayed in sweatpants until the last possible moment, only dressing up right before the cameras rolled. Streep, on the other hand, seemed genuinely delighted by the chaos.
She recalled, "It felt jubilant, when I first got out on Sixth Avenue—where we filmed 20 years ago, and nobody was interested. I got changed, got out of my camper, and just heard this roar! When we shot the wannabe Met Ball, it was even crazier. People were dressed up as Miranda! Honestly, it really threw me." The sequel is scheduled to arrive in theaters on May 1 through Disney's 20th Century Studios. And the cast list alone suggests this isn't a small return. Alongside the original stars, the film brings in Kenneth Branagh, Simone Ashley, Justin Theroux, Lucy Liu, Patrick Brammall, Caleb Hearon, Pauline Chalamet, B.J. Novak, and Conrad Ricamora.
