Is Billy Bob Thornton really leaving ‘Landman’? Bombshell Season 2 moment has fans and us panicking
The sophomore season of 'Landman' picked up its pace and went through several revealing plot points at a remarkable speed in the recently aired penultimate episode on Paramount+. As the future of Billy Bob Thornton's future as the M-Tex fixer and landman turned company President seems to be in jeopardy, one can't help but wonder what kind of fate awaits him. Even at the beginning of the second season, it was quite unthinkable to imagine 'Landman' without Thornton in it. Quite frankly, it still is unimaginable. Nevertheless, something happened on the show that has the potential to upset the established order.
The penultimate episode of 'Landman' season two was titled 'Plans, Tears and Sirens' and had Demi Moore's Cami Miller fire Norris, thus terminating his tenure as the company's acting president. This was followed by the abrupt death of Monty Miller, played by Jon Hamm. However, the rupture wasn't entirely unexpected and had apparently been festering for a while. Decider reported that the primary bone of contention between Miller and Norris proved to be the latter's new venture to establish an offshore oil rig. While Miller wants to jump into the action and make a new fortune for herself and her company, Norris has second thoughts and believes that such a significant risk isn't worth taking.
Furthermore, CBR explained that the ninth episode of the second season featured Miller, Tommy, Charles Newsome, and Rebecca Falcone traveling together in a plane to Louisiana. Once after touching ground, the group proceeded to the rigging site in a convoy of black SUVs. Miller remained jubilant throughout, flaunting her jewellery and her dress. Once she had a chance to catch up with Norris, Miller deliberately told him, "The President of my company can’t be averse to the very thing that built it.", thus firing Norris once and for all. Once, after losing his own fortune, Norris is perhaps a changed man who moves around with caution.
The fact that Tommy was pushed out of his job doesn't necessarily mean that he would eventually leave the show. As of this writing, no official announcement has been made in this regard. Nevertheless, one might surmise that Thornton is here to stay on 'Landman', given that he's the show's primary star and that creator Taylor Sheridan wrote the show with him in mind. It remains to be seen whether the upcoming third season will provide a satisfactory fallout with Norris landing on his feet. There's also the narrative arc of Norris's son Cooper and his six wells at the Wolf Camp site. Could the father-son duo possibly venture into a business of their own? We don't know for sure yet.
Thornton had previously remarked that he would like to appear on the show for as long as they would have him. Speaking in another interview with the Men's Journal, he had commented. "Right now, I don’t know anything ... but I have a feeling a lot of things are really going to ramp up (in Season 3). The first season was so full of action, stuff, and danger. The second season was full of the family and business relationships. It’s just a guess, but I’d imagine things will come to a head." All episodes of 'Landman' are available for streaming on Paramount+.
