Planned surprise pregnancies can occasionally go awry, particularly if they are unexpected for a number of reasons. Recently, a man botched his fiancee's surprise pregnancy reveal because he didn't think it was their child and even questioned her, "No really, whose baby is it?"

The Redditor under the handle 'u/Familiar-Serve-136' shared his story with the users and asked, "AITA for reacting badly at my fiancee's unexpected pregnancy?" The poster detailed in his story that his partner told him earlier that "she was infertile", but didn't share many details about it at the time as they had "only been dating for five or six months."

'She was infertile'

The 31-year-old man and his fiancee, 32, had been together for seven years and got engaged last December, according to his post on Reddit. When his partner revealed to him that "she was infertile," she reportedly felt he should be aware of it in case it was a "deal-breaker" for him. "I assured her that it was fine and that we didn't have to worry about that for now," as per the post. He also told her that there were various approaches if they ever wanted to have children.

'Decided to adopt kids'

The woman eventually admitted to her partner that her inability to become pregnant was "because of ED that had damaged her reproductive system."

"I made sure that she knew how much I loved her because she was kinda ashamed of it, although it's not really her fault," wrote the poster. The doctors essentially informed her that "it won't be possible for her to get pregnant," according to him. They discussed their future and "decided to adopt kids when we were ready to be parents," he said. The man further said in the post that they had decided to be ready for marriage, and they would begin the adoption process. They even stopped using protection at some time in their relationship because "she wasn't in birth control and we were confident that she couldn't get pregnant because that's what doctors have said," as per his post.

'She was sick for a couple of days'

The man said that his fiancee had been feeling sick lately, but wrote it was not unusual given she has celiac disease, and they imbibe contaminated food despite their efforts to prevent it.

"She was sick for a couple of days until she decided to go to the hospital," he wrote. "When she came back she told me she was fine, nothing seemed weird."

Surprise begins

She then told him "she wanted to have a picnic at the beach" and she would take care of everything. "While before the sun sets we walk down to the beach," he said. "She had prepared some sandwiches that we ate, we also ate some fruit/ drink juice etc."  At one point, she instructed him to shut his eyes because she had a surprise for him. When he did, she gave him a piece of paper and instructed him to reopen it.

'You stole this from Google didn't you?'

"It's an ultrasound, ngl my first thought was 'what is this' then I figured out. She was expecting me to say something so I asked her who's baby is it. She told me it was ours," said the man in his post. "This is were I might be the a**h*le. I laughed and said 'no really who's baby is it', she insisted it was ours, and I told her 'you stole this from Google didn't you?' Because I thought she was trying to prank me. She then said this wasn't a prank but I had already messed up her good humor," he added.

'But I messed up'

He followed her as she began to walk back home in a rage and questioned whether it was true. He exclaimed, "I'm very happy and I hugged her, which I think made her a little less angry," when she replied, "Yes." She explained to him that doctors couldn't explain her pregnancy either and that she needed to undergo some tests before they could tell anyone. However, "she wanted me to know," said the man."I feel very sad and like an a*****e, because she was just too excited and had planned a surprise for me but I messed up."

'DOCTORS NEED TO EXPLAIN IT!'

However the internet has his back, a user wrote, "And that's why people need to learn infertile isn't the same as sterile. For the sake of judgment NAH I guess." Another user said, "NTA you were shocked How far along? Congratulations!" Another user wrote, "It would've been the responsiblity of the doctor to explain the condition to op. In medicine sterile and infertile are used differently from each other, but in every day life they are literally synonyms from each other." Another user penned, "I feel like I've heard this happening a lot. People hear "you will never ever get pregnant" when it should be "you may have a more difficult time conceiving". Be that from the doctor explaining badly or them misunderstanding." "DOCTORS NEED TO EXPLAIN IT!!! Why are you putting it on patients? Infertility is a MEDICAL condition a DOCTOR diagnosed her with so it is the DOCTOR’S responsibility to explain the diagnosis," a user remarked.
