How 'LOTR: The Rings of Power' made one creature more terrifying with a secret trick
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: 'The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power' had its share of issues. Although the visuals were impressive, some dialogue felt awkward, and certain plot points were confusing. The show also deviated from Tolkien's original story, altering Sauron's disguise from Annatar to Halbrand and introducing a new backstory for Mithril.
Despite its initial success with viewers, many fans were left disappointed. Hopefully, 'LOTR: The Rings of Power' Season 2 will address the lore issues and deliver more iconic moments. One aspect that did shine, however, was the portrayal of the Orcs—they were a standout feature of the show. A hidden element made them even more terrifying in Season 1.
Are 'LOTR: The Rings of Power's Orcs the most frightening yet?
When Prime Video unveiled the first looks at the Orcs in 'The Rings of Power,' fans were quickly impressed. The design of the creatures generated optimism for the series, which had already faced considerable skepticism.
As the episodes rolled out, it became evident that these Orcs were among the most compelling portrayals to date—cunning, resourceful, and ruthlessly cruel. Unlike their counterparts in 'The Lord of the Rings,' they were not merely mindless minions of a dark lord.
Instead, they had a rich history, led by Adar, a corrupted Elf tortured by Morgoth. The show explored their ancient origins, revealing that Morgoth created Orcs from twisted Elves, a concept rooted in Tolkien's own evolving lore.
How did 'LOTR: The Rings of Power' make Orcs sound so terrifying?
'The Rings of Power' added depth to the Orcs with stunning visuals and Adar's story, but there's a secret ingredient that makes them truly terrifying. Composer Bear McCreary revealed in Deadline's 'Inside The Ring' Episode 6 that he used bone-made woodwind instruments to create a primal and scary sound.
One instrument, the Aztec Death Whistle, sounded like a scream, and McCreary wove these eerie sounds throughout the score to signal the Orcs' presence. This intentional move to up the fear factor worked, even unsettling some actors on set.
While 'The Rings of Power' has room for improvement after Season 1, the Orcs' fear factor is one thing that's spot on.
