How did Tony Barry die?
Australian actor, Barry, and "honorary Kiwi", was diagnosed with a type of skin cancer called Melanoma in 2007. Barry had his left leg amputated above the knee after receiving a diagnosis that required the amputation of a limb. Despite his melanoma surgery in 2013, Barry never stopped working. He battled his health problems for years before dying at the age of 81.
Filmmaker Gaylene Preston wrote on facebook saying, "It is with a heavy heart that we farewell Tony Barry who died peacefully yesterday at Murwillumbah NSW after a long illness. Pictured here with me during the making of Home By Christmas, he played my father and became one of the family ever after. He won best actor at the Qantas awards in 2010 for that performance. He was one of a kind. A fierce fighter for the underdog, working for indigenous rights and as part of rehabilitation programmes in the justice system and for the environment. He considered himself an honourary Kiwi being the only Australian to feature on a NZ postage stamp for his role in Goodbye Pork Pie. Diagnosed with melanoma in 2007, he insisted in keeping going, working to the end. A mighty tree has fallen. A warrior is lying down. RIP Tow bar."
Barry's long career began in 1968 as he made a guest appearance role on 'Skippy', the famous series about a bush kangaroo. Arguably his most famous role came much later in 2008 when he starred alongside Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman in Baz Luhrmann's 'Australia.' He portrayed the role of Sgt Callahan in the blockbuster.
