Jean-Marc Vallée: 'Big Little Lies' director, 58, died from a heart attack

UPDATE: New details that have emerged in 'Dallas Buyers Club' filmmaker Jean-Marc Vallée have confirmed that he died from a heart attack at his cabin outside Quebec City over Christmas. Known to be a health enthusiast, Vallée avoided drinking, regularly worked out and practiced Wim Hof’s extreme breathing methods, in which one has to hold their breath for long periods of time, often in frigid environments.

Jean-Marc Vallée, the Quebecois director of films including 'Dallas Buyers Club' and popular TV projects like 'Big Little Lies', has died outside Quebec City, aged 58. The cause of his death is yet to be revealed. 

Vallée producing partner, Nathan Ross, said in a statement, “Jean-Marc stood for creativity, authenticity and trying things differently. He was a true artist and a generous, loving guy. Everyone who worked with him couldn’t help but see the talent and vision he possessed. He was a friend, creative partner and an older brother to me. The maestro will sorely be missed but it comforts knowing his beautiful style and impactful work he shared with the world will live on.”

Vallée was born in Vallée Montreal and studied film at the Université du Québec. He made various music videos and short films before making his first feature 'Black List'. He is survived by two children and three siblings.

Vallée won an Oscar nomination for best editing for 2013’s 'Dallas Buyers Club', a film that was based on the true story of Ron Woodroof, an AIDS patient who smuggled pharmaceutical drugs. Vallée later directed 'Wild', which starred Reese Witherspoon. He won the Emmy for 'Big Little Lies'. Another one of his popular works includes the HBO mini-series based on a popular book, 'Sharp Little Objects'.

Fans mourned the death of Jean-Marc Vallée after the news of his passing surfaced. "RIP Jean-Marc Vallée, who’s brilliance gave us some of the best prestige television in modern history," one user wrote on Twitter. " "Thank you for your works, Jean-Marc Vallée. He directed two Oscar wins, three Emmy wins, and was a DGA and Emmy winner himself," wrote another user.

He will be greatly missed," one user wrote, while another said, "Even if you’ve never heard of Jean-Marc Vallee, you’ve almost certainly seen his TV directing work on “Big Little Lies” & “Sharp Objects” or his movies like “Dallas Buyers Club” & “Wild.” He had such a unique visual and narrative style. Such an immense talent gone too soon. RIP."
