How did Dick Clark die? All we know about 'Dick Clark's New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest’ 2024
NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: It's time to sashay into 2023 with the staple of celebrations, 'Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve'. The holiday special will once again be hosted by Ryan Seacrest, who has been a regular face of the event since 2006. Seacrest has co-hosted the event for seven years with its late founder and host Dick Clark. The 'Live With Kelly and Ryan' star will count down to midnight in New York City’s Times Square, lighting up the heart of New York.
'Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve' (NYRE) is an annual New Year's Eve television special broadcast by ABC. The event has been named after its creator and namesake Clark, who conceived the event to compete with CBS' Guy Lombardo's long-running New Year's Eve big band broadcasts. The 'NYRE' special first aired on December 31, 1972. Its first two editions were broadcast by NBC and hosted by Three Dog Night and George Carlin, respectively, with Clark holding the fort in Times Square. Its popularity was such that it consistently remained the highest-rated New Year's Eve special broadcast by the US' major television networks. Its 2012 edition peaked at 22.6 million home viewers, per US Magazine.

While Clark was a staple at 'NYRE' for the longest time, in December 2004, he suffered a stroke. Then, Regis Philbin served as guest host that year. Due to lingering speech impediments from the stroke, Clark ceded hosting duties to Seacrest the following year but continued to make limited appearances as a co-host until his death in 2012.
How did Dick Clark die?
Clark revealed in April 2004 on 'Larry King Live' that he had Type 2 diabetes. Fast forward to December the same year, he was hospitalized in Los Angeles after suffering what was initially termed a minor stroke at the age of 75. That year, he was unable to host the 'NYRE' broadcast and Philbin jumped in. Even though Clark returned the following year, the dysarthria from the stroke left him unable to speak clearly for the rest of his life. Dysarthria is a speech sound disorder resulting from neurological injury of the motor component of the motor–speech system. It is characterized by the poor articulation of phonemes.
On April 18, 2012, he died from a heart attack after undergoing a transurethral resection procedure to treat an enlarged prostate, in Santa Monica, California, and was 81 at the time. He was cremated on April 20, and his ashes were scattered over the Pacific Ocean after his estate obtained the necessary environmental permits.
