The newest show in the ‘Game of Thrones’ universe, titled ‘House of the Dragon’, will be making its way to HBO in a few days and once again, we will be taken back to the times when House Targaryen reigned supreme. However, one of the integral aspects of the show is obviously DRAGONS. If you have watched ‘Game of Thrones’, then you already know that the show featured three dragons: Drogon (black and red), Rhaegal (green and bronze), and Viserion (cream and gold).

However, the makers have announced that ‘House of the Dragon’ will feature 17 ginormous dragons. Yes, you heard it right. Although, there will be only a handful number of dragons that will prominently make appearances in the series. This is one of the best things to have come out of the upcoming series and it will be thrilling to see so many dragons taking flight at once. So, let’s take a look at all the prominent flying beasts that will be featured on the show.

'House of the Dragon': Who is Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen? Emma D'Arcy, Milly Alcock depict different eras of Realm's Delight

Caraxes (Daemon Targaryen’s Dragon)

Daemon Targaryen is one of the most important characters in the ‘House of the Dragon’ and will be played by the supremely talented Matt Smith. As far as history is concerned, Caraxes is considered to be one of the oldest and largest dragons of the Targaryen family. His scales are red-colored and that’s the reason that Caraxes is also known as the Blood Wyrm. According to the novels, it was Aemon Targaryen who rode the dragon first and became riderless after Aemon was killed by a crossbow.

Syrax (Rhaenyra Targaryen’s Dragon)

‘House of the Dead’ primarily focuses on Rhaenyra Targaryen and her quest to become the Queen of Westeros. King Viserys announced her as the heir to the throne and wrote in his will that she will lead the kingdom once he is dead. She rode the dragon for the first when she was just seven years of age and after taking her first flight, she named the dragon Syrax. Even though he is not as big as Caraxes, Syrax is undoubtedly one of the formidable ones. His scales are yellow and Rhaenyra named her after a Valyrian goddess. She had no riders before the princess.

Meleys (Rhaenys Targaryen’s Dragon)

Meleys is in the possession of Princess Rhaenys Velaryon and is bright red in color. Due to her bright red color, people started calling her ‘The Red Queen’. For the uninitiated, Meleys is also one of the oldest and largest dragons in the ‘Game of Thrones’ book series.

Vhagar (Aemond Targaryen’s Dragon)

Aemond Targaryen, who is the brother of Aegon and Daeron, is also a dragon like his brothers. His dragon is called Vhagar, who was one of the three dragons that the dynasty used to conquer the Seven Kingdoms. However, at that time, the dragon was being ridden by Queen Visenya Targaryen. When we talk about ‘House of the Dragon’, Vhagar is the second-largest dragon in Westeros and is only beaten by Balerion, who is touted as the greatest dragon to have ever lived.

His scales are bronze and he has bright green eyes.

Sunfyre (Aegon Targaryen’s Dragon)

Aegon is one of the characters that were discussed in ‘Game of Thrones’ and if you have seen the show then Jon Snow’s real name was revealed to be Aegon Targaryen as well. But we are not talking about Jon Snow, we are talking about the eventual king of Westeros, Aegon Targaryen. He was also a dragon rider and his dragon’s name is Sunfyre. The aforementioned dragon is different from the previous ones because of his gleaming golden scales. Another thing that makes Sunfyre so unique is his golden flames. He is one of the youngest dragons in the Targaryen family and also one of the biggest ones.

Tessarion (Daeron Targaryen’s Dragon)

Daeron is the younger brother of Aegon and is the only male member who rides a female dragon called Tessarion. Tessarion, similarly to Meleys, is known as the Blue Queen due to the dark cobalt blue color of her wings. She is very much like Sunfyre because his flames also match the color of her scales: bright blue.

Other Dragons to feature in ‘House of the Dragon’

Dreamfyre (Halaena Targaryen's Dragon)

Initially ridden by Rhaena Targaryen, Dreamfyre is a pale blue and silver dragon that is now in possession of Halaena, sister of Aemond, Daeron, and Aegon.

Moondancer (Baela Targaryen's Dragon)

Being only the size of a warhorse, Moondancer is the perfect choice for a young girl named Baela, who is the daughter of Daemon Targaryen. The dragon is green in color and is often described as someone who is very fast on land and sky.

Silverwing (Ulf White's Dragon)

Initially ridden by Alysanne Targaryen, grandmother of King Viserys,  Silverwing is now in the possession of Ulf White, a Targaryen bastard.

The show will primarily focus on the aforementioned dragons and will have the most screen time.

'House of the Dragon' premieres exclusively on HBO and HBO Max on Sunday, August 21, at 9 pm EST.
