At a recent event on the occasion of International Women's Day, Hillary Clinton reacted to Harry and Meghan Markle's interview with Oprah Winfrey and came out in support of the couple. Harry and Meghan spoke about why they were pushed to step down from their royal duties and leave the UK and also claimed that members of the royal family had conversations surrounding what their son Archie's skin color was going to be.

Reacting to their claims and the opposing views that have been shared on social media, Clinton said at the March 8 event, "I found it so heart-rending to watch." She added that she had met the couple and also Harry's late mother Princess Diana. She also said it was heartbreaking that Meghan was not welcomed or "fully embraced" not just by "the permanent bureaucracy that surrounds the royal family, but by the media in the UK".

Clinton also empathized with Meghan and said that she was aware of how vitriolic the UK tabloids can get. She further appreciated Meghan attempting to advocate for herself and called her "incredibly accomplished". She said, "You know I've had my time in the box with the British tabloids, as anybody who is in the public eye has had. And their cruelty in going after Meghan was just outrageous and the fact she did not get more support, that the reaction was, 'Let's just paper it over and pretend that it didn't happen or it will go away, just keep your head down.'"

She added, "Well, you know, this young woman was not about to keep her head down. You know, this is 2021 and she wanted to live her life, she wanted to be fully engaged and she had every right to hope for that." She also stated, "Every institution has got to make more space and acceptance for young people coming up, particularly young women, who should not be forced into a mold that is no longer relevant, not only for them, but for our society.”

Speaking on how it was heartbreaking to watch the interview, Clinton said, "And it was heartbreaking to see the two of them sitting there having to describe how difficult it was to be accepted, to be integrated, not just into the royal family as they described, but more painfully into the larger societies whose narrative is driven by tabloids that are living in the past. I just hope that there will be some serious thoughtful consideration in all of the institutions, not just in response to what Meghan and Harry were talking about, but literally across all of our societies." She also questioned why it was so hard to be inclusive. She stated that diversity was important for such establishments to carry on into the future. She asked, "Why do we make it so hard to incorporate diversity, to celebrate it, to be proud of it?"

She also explained that Harry and Meghan were "not only standing up for themselves and for their children, but they're really trying to send a message about what institutions, including the one that they were part of, need to do to be more dynamic and forward looking than they currently are". Reacting to Clinton taking Meghan and Prince Harry's sides, many supported her, but many more also told her to do her research before taking sides.

One user wrote, "Do some research on those two before taking their side just based on their pretty pics, word salad and victim and race cards! Their interview was FULL of lies!!" Another user shared, "@HillaryClinton Very surprised re your comments #HarryandMeghanonOprah , as an ex-diplomat you surely know that the Royal Family would refute many of the allegations." Another user made a sarcastic remark and said, "@HillaryClinton you have experience of the British press being harsh? That was probably bill's fault." Another user wrote, "@HillaryClinton you cannot comment on some fictional imaginary story of H&M when you have only heard one side of the story and nobody has verified their story! You only make yourself look foolish by making any comments!"

Since the interview with Oprah aired, both Harry and Meghan have been at the receiving end of backlash for betraying their family, among other things. Many have also claimed that the allegations made by both of them are lies and fabricated to seek sympathy and attention.
