Hilary Duff asks Disney to move 'Lizzie McGuire' revival to Hulu to explore more adult themes: 'Will be a dream'
Actress Hilary Duff has posted a statement requesting Disney to move the planned revival of 'Lizzie McGuire' from Disney Plus to Hulu.
Earlier this year, it was announced that 'Lizzie McGuire' creator Terri Minsky was leaving her role as the showrunner for the revival as a Disney spokesperson said, "We need to move in a different creative direction and are putting a new lens on the show."
Duff and Minsky wanted to do a more adult version of Lizzie for the revival, while Disney wanted a show that would appeal to kids and families, something more akin to the original series.
Though Disney was initially onboard with Minsky and Duff’s take according to Variety, the company decided to move in a different direction with the series after the first two episodes were completed. Production has since been stalled.
Duff's statement comes days after 'Love, Simon' — now titled 'Love, Victor' — was moved to Hulu from Disney Plus, after Disney was reportedly worried about how some of the show's adult themes, including alcohol use, marital issues, and sexual exploration would be perceived on its flagship streaming service.
Duff's statement reads, "I’d be doing a disservice to everyone by limiting the realities of a 30-year-old’s journey to live under the ceiling of a PG rating. It’s important to me that just as her experiences as a preteen/teenager navigating life were authentic, her next chapters are equally as real and relatable. It would be a dream if Disney would let us move the show to Hulu if they were interested, and I could bring this beloved character to life again."
When Disney's decision to move 'Love, Simon' was announced, the singer posted a story, citing an article covering the issue and wrote, "Sounds familiar," circling the words "family-friendly" in the article.
'Love, Victor' is not the only show to get moved from the Disney-branded streamer to Hulu. The recently-released 'High Fidelity' series starring Zoe Kravitz was originally set up at Disney Plus before ultimately landing at Hulu, which is now controlled by Disney after the company struck a deal with Comcast for control of the service.
