Netflix's latest documentary series harkens back to the golden age of gaming - the earliest days of Nintendo, the original 'Doom' games, the days of playing 'Mario' or 'Mortal Kombat' that inspired an endless number of franchise sequels, spinoffs and remakes that continue to this day. While there are those who may argue about when the golden age of gaming truly is, this is a series for those nostalgic for gaming classics and are invested in learning the stories that led to their creation.

The series will talk to game designers, coders and the minds behind some of history's greatest and most influential games. It will track the history of classic video games, featuring insights from those who brought those beloved characters to life. The games that will be explored include arcade classics like 'Space Invaders,' 'Mortal Kombat,' and 'Street Fighter 2,' as well as home console hits like 'Sonic the Hedgehog,' 'Final Fantasy,' and 'Madden NFL.'

The series covers both Eastern and Western game designers, tracking the influence of gaming culture around the world. Gaming now has taken on a whole new level, with games available on phones, various consoles, and in reality both Augmented and Virtual. Back then, however, things were decidedly less advanced, but the games released still captured the imaginations of millions - and they still do, to this day. Netflix's 'High Score' is a must-see for fans who are interested in the history of gaming and how it has affected the landscape of gaming today.

This is far from the first time that Netflix has tapped directly into the nostalgia market for a documentary. With 'The Toys that Made Us,' and 'Power of Grayskull: The Definitive History of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe,' these Netflix docuseries have tapped directly into audiences' passion for times gone by. This is not even Netflix's first foray into nostalgic gaming culture, having explored similar territory in 'Man vs Snake,' 'Atari: Game Over,' and 'Video Games: The Movie.' There's a lot of story to be told in how gaming came to be the cultural giant that it is today and Netflix is taking you back to where it all started.

'High Score' premieres on August 19, on Netflix.
