Heartbreaking story behind Diana's aquamarine ring worn by Meghan Markle as tribute at Ripple of Hope gala
NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Meghan Markle looked stunning on Tuesday, December 6, as she stepped out in New York to receive the Ripple of Hope Award with her husband Prince Harry at a gala by the Robert F Kennedy Human Rights organization. Markle, 41, paid tribute to her late mother-in-law at the prestigious award ceremony.
The former Suits star made quite an impression in a custom Louis Vuitton ankle-length dress with long off-shoulder sleeves along with folded detailing on the waist. The Duchess of Sussex completed her look with black pointed heels which she matched with a Givenchy clutch and gold earrings. However, what caught the eyes of spectators is the beautiful aquamarine ring that previously belonged to Princess Diana.

The aquamarine accessory which nearly costs $90,000 is of great sentimental and symbolic value as the lavish crystal was gifted to Princess Diana by her close friend, Lucia Flecha de Lima, who was the wife of the former ambassador of Brazil to the UK.
The striking cocktail ring reportedly features an emerald cut aquamarine flanked by small solitaire diamonds and is positioned on a 24-carat yellow gold band. "Aquamarine is one of the most visually beautiful gemstones. With an enchanting pale blue color, the ring was a perfect addition to Meghan's Ripple of Hope Gala outfit and carries a great deal of sentiment with it - not only did it belong to Meghan's late mother-in-law, Princess Diana, but the Duchess wore it as her 'something blue' on her wedding day in 2018,” explained Maxwell Stone, as per Hello! "Having been passed down to Meghan Markle from Harry, it's interesting to know that the Aquamarine's light blue color symbolizes feelings of sympathy, trust, and friendship," he further stated. "While the ring is no doubt priceless, if it were available to buy, it would be worth around £85,000."
The family heirloom that is passed on to Prince Harry from his late mother Diana, travels with a poignant story. As per the outlet, the gifted crystal was created into a ring by iconic British luxury Asprey in 1996. However, Diana was able to wear the enchanting rock only on two occasions before her death.
According to OK! Lucia had remained “Diana’s confidante” even after her moving to the United States due to her husband being assigned to a post in America. However, she would often return to the UK to stay with Diana. The two were such close friends that Diana would share her romantic exploits with the diplomat’s wife. “I told Diana, ‘You don’t seem to be English but Latin,'” Lucia said. Known as the “second mother” to the late princess, Lucia famously claimed that of the three significant men in Diana's life, she was "not in love with Dodi Fayed", she may have had a "passion" for heart surgeon Hasnat Khan but "the love of her life" was then-Prince Charles. Lucia died at her home in Brasília in April 2017, aged 76, from cancer of the womb.
