Did Harry Styles REALLY say 'I am a mermaid'? Truth behind viral photo and his Ariel look for 'SNL'

Fans took to Twitter and had a few recasting ideas regarding 'The Little Mermaid' live-action movie

The power fandoms wield when it comes to getting topics trending on Twitter is truly unparalleled. This time around, One Direction and Harry Styles fans seem to be all gushing over one thing in particular — Harry Styles dressed up as a mermaid. 

The musician was photographed for 'SNL' in 2019, rocking a mermaid tail, a red wig and a seashell bra, an ode to Disney's 'Little Mermaid' character, Ariel. Although his version includes a flute of champagne. But turns out, Styles affiliation to the mythical aquatic beings flows much deeper.

The artist is known for his love for getting inked, seeing that he has multiple tattoos, such as two swallows on his pecs, a butterfly across his upper abdomen, a ship on his left arm and a padlock on his left wrist, among many others. 

Back in 2014, he revealed to Hollywood Life that he had gotten another tattoo — a mermaid on his left forearm. When asked about the reason behind getting a mermaid, Styles answer was simple — "I am a mermaid," he replied, with a cheeky smile, reportedly. With his 'SNL' photos resurfacing, it looks like Styles are not kidding when he said that. 

Twitter couldn't stop fawning over the photos of the musician. "My newest tattoo is of a mermaid. [Why?] I am a mermaid.” (Harry Styles, 2014)," tweeted a fan with an image of the star's tattoo. "STOP MERMAID HARRY/ ARIEL HARRY IS EVERYTHING TO ME," gushed another. 

Incidentally, Styles was also in talks to play Prince Eric in the 'The Little Mermaid' live-action movie. However, he turned down the role, with the intent of focusing more on his music. The live-action has quite the star cast already, starring Halle Bailey as Ariel, Melissa McCarthy as Ursula, with Jacob Tremblay voicing Flounder and Awkwafina voicing Scuttle. “I want to put music out and focus on that for a while,” he said in an interview with The Face Magazine. “But everyone involved in it was amazing," he added. "So I think it’s going to be great," he said. 

Twitter had an interesting idea and began 'recasting', suggesting that maybe Styles should play Ariel and that his former band member, Louis Tomlinson could take up the role of Prince Eric. "Mermaid Harry, I think he would have preferred playing Ariel instead of Eric in the Little Mermaid pic from SNL," tweeted a fan. "@DisneyStudios hear me out!! Prince Louis and his little mermaid Harry? For the lived action version?" petitioned another. "No but someone really gotta write a fic/smau about prince Louis and mermaid Harry," asked another. 

And as always, the memes that followed were endless. "THIS MANIP WALKED SO MERMAID HARRY COULD RUN" tweeted a fan. "Mermaid Kylie or Mermaid Harry? ( There’s only 1 right answer)," asked another. "Mermaid harry pilgrim harry," tweeted another. "Ballet and mermaid harry are married," added a fan.
