Spoilers for 'Hard Knocks: Los Angeles' Episode 2

By now, the Los Angeles Rams and Chargers are more or less accustomed to what seems to be the new normal ahead of the NFL season starting in September. The walkthroughs are in full swing, so are the workouts, the meetings, and the testing of players. To ease the stress and constant tension Covid-19 brought with it, the mood in both camps is intense and jovial, and that's pretty much the new season is all about. There's also a look at the key players and their roles in the team.

Take Andrew Whitworth, the Rams' offensive tackle. Nearing his 40s, Whitworth comes back to take the field after his entire family tested positive for the coronavirus earlier in the year. However, he doesn't blame anyone, as it can even happen to the best of people. But he's back putting the hard yards despite the age and that earns him a massive sign of respect from the team. While the veterans have it relatively easy for both teams as they get to go home, the rookies have quite the task.

Cooped up in a hotel room after practice, the rookies need to make sure they do everything by the book. Eat right, stay safe, memorize plays, and get some exercise in. With not enough game time to prove their worth, the onus is on them to make some slick plays that grab eyeballs and that means taking the reps in practice seriously. 'Hard Knocks' Episode 2 is relatively on the quiet side as it focuses on Phase 2 of training. This time, the helmets come out first.

There's enough protection as there is a visor that's added for extra protection for the players. There have been new measures as well. Players are provided with wrist trackers that help maintain social distancing measures. Failure to wear it comes brings in a hefty fine. And despite all this, it's pleasing to see the game slowly getting back on track. It does appear the NFL has spent considerable time and effort to make the season happen.

At this stage, it is too early to debate about the safety protocols extending beyond the season. Should the coronavirus now become a regular part of life as we know it, then sports will have stringent protocols, cancellations, reschedules, and the works. But for now, 'Hard Knocks' gives a look at the preparation that's shaping up quite well for both teams. Like the first episode, the second makes sure it provides new insights about the season.

So Phase 2 is about getting them helmets and cleats out. Now if that's not good news, we don't know what else is.

'Hard Knocks: Los Angeles' airs Tuesdays 10 pm ET on HBO.
