'Grey's Anatomy' Season 16 Episode 8: Andrew DeLuca was right in breaking up with Meredith Grey
The latest episode of 'Grey's Anatomy' delivered several punches to the gut. While it was a victory of sorts for Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) as she won the case in court for committing insurance fraud, her relationship with Andrew DeLuca (Giacomo Gianniotti) might be on the rocks.
During a small recess, a stressed out Meredith tells DeLuca that their relationship won't be able to make it if she does not retain her medical license, as he would 'get to cut', and she wouldn't. DeLuca is visibly hurt but does not react just yet. At the end of the episode, he reminds her that he went to jail for her, stood up for her in court and has continued fighting for her, but she clearly doesn't see him as an equal, whereas she saw Derek (Patrick Dempsey) as one and had enormous respect for him. Meredith tries to explain herself, but DeLuca tells her to sleep over it.
To be fair, DeLuca does have a point. Meredith might have noble intentions for many and might care a lot about DeLuca, but her statement to him was rather off-putting. Clearly, Meredith needs to appreciate DeLuca more, rather than taking him for granted. Hopefully, she realizes the importance of DeLuca in her life, considering she still treats him like a kid.
However, fans are furious with him for breaking up with Meredith. One fan wrote, "I, for one, am glad that DeLuca & Meredith aren’t together anymore. #GreysAnatomy."
Another fan was angry with DeLuca for this, "DeLuca giving ultimatums? Excuse me?" While another fan agreed that DeLuca should never try to compete with Derek. "Deluca knew what was up. He can’t compete." Another viewer wrote, "Anyways Meredith is better off without Deluca, he's beneath her and not in a good way."
One viewer tweeted, "Deluca needs to take a seat because MerDer took me on a rollercoaster with their relationship to get to where they were and Meredith hasn't even put him into a turning tea cup yet."
Another wrote, "A wonderful thing came out of this. DeLuca realized Meredith will never love & respect him the way she loved & respected Derek. He's not on her level & when she dropped that "if you can cut but I can't we'll never make it" line to him it cut him deep."
The point is, it's not that DeLuca couldn't measure up to Derek, it's that he realized that he didn't have that place in Meredith's life, if she could cut him off because he could be a surgeon and she couldn't. DeLuca has also fought a lot for Meredith, but has realized he is not getting enough in return.
'Grey's Anatomy' aired on ABC on November 14.
