'Greenland' starring Gerard Butler: Release date, plot, cast, trailer and all you need to know about the disaster film coming on VoD

Disaster films and pandemic-themed series have been the flavor of the year, no kidding there. As the year draws to a close, a look back at the last few months has seen a steep rise in the percentage of viewing content across multiple platforms with movies set for theatrical releases opting to debut on streamers. Gerard Butler's 'Greenland' is one of those films that will be released by STX Entertainment and is skipping the silver screen.

Last year, Butler gave the world a hit with 'Angel Has Fallen' and is back again as John Garrity, a man fighting for survival with his family as they desperately attempt to escape a planet-destroying comet hurtling towards Earth. Here's a quick primer about the flick that releases in December. 

Release date

'Greenland' is slated to be released domestically by STX Entertainment through VoD on December 18, 2020, and then play on HBO Max.

Plot

The official synopsis reads: "A family fights for survival as planet-killing comet races to Earth. John Garrity (Gerard Butler), his estranged wife Allison (Morena Baccarin), and young son Nathan make a perilous journey to their only hope for sanctuary. Amid terrifying news accounts of cities around the world being leveled by the comet’s fragments, the Garrity’s experience the best and worst in humanity while they battle the increasing panic and lawlessness surrounding them. As the countdown to global apocalypse approaches zero, their incredible trek culminates in a desperate and last-minute flight to a possible safe haven."

Butler plays John Garrity, a family man who makes a frantic escape to Greenland with his family. He plays a Scottish architect. While people fondly remember him for the romance drama 'P.S. I Love You', it was in the epic war drama '300' that he made heads turn as the Spartan king Leonidas. The breathtakingly visual movie saw Leonidas lead 300 Spartans into battle against the Persian "God-King" Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro) and his army of over 300,000 soldiers that sealed Butler's persona as an action hero. Butler is best-known for playing secret Service agent Mike Banning in the action thriller series 'Olympus Has Fallen', 'London Has Fallen', 'Angel Has Fallen' and the upcoming 'Night Has Fallen.'

Morena Baccarin as Allison Garrity

Baccarin plays Allison Garrity, John's estranged wife. The Brazilian-American actress has had quite the journey in Hollywood with a string of top TV shows and films. She is known for portraying Inara Serra in the sci-fi series 'Firefly' and the follow-up flick 'Serenity'. Her other major acting credits include the 'Deadpool' duology.  On TV, she garnered critcial acclaim for playing Jessica Brody in the Emmy-award winning Showtime thriller series, 'Homeland'.

Veteran actor Glenn plays Dale. Fans will remember him as Ezra Kramer in 'The Bourne Ultimatum', and as Stick in both 'Daredevil' and 'The Defenders'. David Denman ('Fanboys') as Ralph Vento, Hope Davis ('Captain America: Civil War') as Judy Vento, Andrew Bachelor ('Holidate') as Colin, Merrin Dungey ('Conviction') as Major Breen, and Gary Weeks ('Five Weeks Apart') as Ed Pruitt round up the rest of the cast. 

Writer/Director

Chris Parling ('Mercy') serves as the writer. 'Angel Has Fallen' and 'Snitch' director, Ric Roman Waugh serves helms the film with Gerard Butler. Basil Iwanyk, Sébastien Raybaud, and Alan Siegel as producers.
