Netflix Quietly Cancels 6 Shows in 2026, Including The Abandons and The Vince Staples Show
What’s in the Box?
'What’s in the Box?' was a brand-new show, hosted by Neil Patrick Harris. It premiered on December 17, 2025, with all six episodes out on the very first day. In this show, several pairs of contestants are put through a gruelling test of fast-paced trivia, during which they guess what's inside each box. After unpacking the box, the game shifts to another level where contestants need to prove their smarts, strategy, and stamina to defend their prizes and come out as the winner. The team with the most prizes after this stage will get the chance to compete for the Super Box, which could make them $250,000 richer. The game show garnered a dedicated fanbase who, after months without updates, began worrying about its future. Their answers came from Veteran TV journalist Matt Webb Mitovich, who said, “I am hearing there are no plans at this time for more episodes of the Neil Patrick Harris-hosted game show," regarding the show on his site.
Selling the City
'Selling the City' was the second spin-off of the immensely successful 'Selling Sunset.' Unlike the other two shows- Selling Sunset and Selling the OC- the main players of this show were not working in the Oppenheim Group. The agents were from the real estate brokerage Douglas Elliman and dealt in the Big Apple's luxury housing market. The show starred Eleonora Srugo, Jade Chan, Taylor Middleton, Jordyn Taylor Braff, Abigail Godfrey, Gisselle Meneses-Núñez, Justin Tuinstra, and Steve Gold. All episodes of the show's first season were released on January 3, 2026. The show quickly carved its own path and even achieved a coveted spot on Netflix's Top 10 chart. The finale, with the nasty off-camera clash between Eleonora Srugo and Jade Chan, left the audience wanting more. However, their wish will not be fulfilled, as TMZ recently reported that the streamer has quietly cancelled the show. The decision was apparently taken to focus on 'just one real estate franchise.'
Miss Governor
'Miss Governor' was a sitcom created by Tyler Perry and Niya Palmer. The show followed Antoinette Dunkerson (Terri J. Vaughn), who wins the post of Lieutenant Governor in Mississippi and later uncovers that she serves under the sexist and condescending Governor Erwin Harper (Robert Craighead). Along with facing the challenges of her professional life, where she is now the state's first Black lieutenant governor, Dunkerson also needs to keep an eye on the personal front as her family suddenly finds themselves under immense scrutiny. Alongside Vaughn, the show also stars Jade Novah as Shamika, Jo Marie Payton as Cleo Dyon Brooks as Basil, Drew Olivia Tillman as Lola Dunkerson, Tré Boyd as Titus Dunkerson, and Karon Riley as Michael. The show was released in two parts, with the first batch of eight episodes becoming available on May 22, 2025, and the second batch coming out on August 14, 2025. The sitcom broke into the Top 10 list of 19 countries, peaking at number 2 in the United States. However, this performance wasn't enough to keep it alive. Vaughn revealed the heartbreaking news on her social media. “I have to admit, I was quite heartbroken when I first got the info,” the star shared in an Instagram video. “I really worked my a** off to make that show come to fruition.”
Pop The Balloon Live
'Pop The Balloon Live' was a dating show from the minds of Bolia Matundu (BM) and Arlette Amuli. 'Pop The Balloon' is an internet phenomenon from these two creators. Netflix kept all rules more or less the same and made it a Live event. Each episode features several singles who are then put before the suitor. The suitor pops the balloon of the hopeful they do not want to pursue. The participants can pop their own balloon, as well, if they want to move out of the pool. The streamer believed that the live format would deliver more drama, dilemmas, and raw, unfiltered romance. The Netflix version was hosted by Emmy-nominated Nigerian American comedian, actor, and author Yvonne Orji and premiered on April 10, 2025. For two months, new episodes aired every Thursday at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT. After the first episode released, the show reached number nine on the Netflix Top 10 chart in the US. No other installment, though, made it to the chart. Its cancellation was made public almost a year later by Deadline.
The Abandons
'The Abandons' was supposed to be Netflix's 'Yellowstone' but hopped out just after one season. The show was headlined by Gillian Anderson and Lena Headey, who played the widowed matriarchs of two very different families in Jasper Hollow. "The families find their fates linked by two crimes, an awful secret, star-crossed love, and a piece of land over a silver lode. Their collision in a place just beyond the reach of justice echoes the perpetual American struggle between the haves and have-nots," the show's synopsis read. The show's title comes from the band of outcasts and orphans brought together by Headey’s Fiona Nolan. The western drama was released on December 4, 2025, with all seven episodes. As per Rotten Tomatoes, the drama fell flat in front of both critics and the audience. The show was swiftly cancelled by the streamer just a month after its release, as per Deadline.
The Vince Staples Show
'The Vince Staples Show' was a comedy that followed rapper and actor Vince Staples as he navigates being 'famous' and 'rich' in Long Beach, California. The lead character is played by Staples, who portrays a hyper-fictionalized version of his life in the show. Three months after its premiere, the show was renewed for its sophomore installment. The second season came out on November 6, 2025, and featured Staples navigating a tragic death. As per Rotten Tomatoes, the show was both critically acclaimed and adored by the audience. Despite such scores, the show never arrived in the Top 10 charts. Deadline announced that the streamer cancelled the satirical comedy along with 'The Abandons' because of declining viewership.
