Best TV shows and movies to watch on HBO Max this September

Fuze is a heist movie starring Theo James and Aaron Taylor-Johnson. The film was originally released in theaters in April and is now available to stream on HBO Max as of September 4. Fuze is described as an “action-thriller triggered when construction workers in London discover an unexploded World War II bomb. With the entire city being forced to evacuate for fear of its detonation, a group of men decide to exploit the chaos. Using the evacuation as a cover, a team is gathered as they think fast on their feet to pull off an elaborate heist. Meanwhile, bomb disposal expert Major Will Tranter and police chief Zuzana Greenfield become entangled in the unfolding crisis, tensions escalate and loyalties blur.”

For those who missed Supergirl in theaters or simply want to rewatch it, the DC movie arrives on HBO Max on September 10, following its June theatrical release. Milly Alcock plays the lead role of Kara Zor-El, also known as Supergirl. According to Warner Bros., “When an unexpected and ruthless adversary strikes too close to home, Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl, reluctantly joins forces with an unlikely companion on an epic, interstellar journey of vengeance and justice.” 

HBO Max has something for true crime fans as well! A Killer Story is a three-part documentary series scheduled to premiere on September 10. Following the debut, new episodes will drop on subsequent Thursdays. Filmed over the course of six years, A Killer Story “examines a polarizing murder case that spanned more than two decades and captured national attention. At the center of the case is Dana Chandler, who was accused of killing her ex-husband and his girlfriend in 2002.”

HBO Original comedy series, titled Youth, will drop its first two episodes on HBO Max on September 20. After that, new episodes are scheduled to arrive weekly on Sundays, with the finale set for November 1. Sharon Horgan not only created the show but also stars in it. Youth follows a “50-year-old divorcee’s search for s*x and love whilst juggling caring for her ailing parents and parenting her should-be grown-up son.” 

If you have not heard about Backrooms, then chances are you have been living in a bubble. The psychological horror movie is directed by YouTube creator Kane Parsons and became A24’s highest-grossing worldwide release. Having originally made its debut in theaters in May, it will now be available to stream on HBO Max starting September 25. As A24 understandably did not want to give too much away, the official loglines for Backrooms are quite abstruse. One states, “A strange doorway appears in the basement of a furniture showroom,” while another reads, “After her patient disappears into a strange dimension beyond reality, a therapist is forced to brave the unknown in order to bring him back alive.”

As the name suggests, 4 Blocks Zero is the prequel to 4 Blocks, which ran for three seasons. The new eight-episode series “explores the early years of the Hamady family.” The official synopsis reads: “Having fled from Lebanon with his four children and mother-in-law, Malik Hamady (Rami Fadel Khalaf) attempts to provide a better life for his family in Germany but struggles to gain a foothold amid prejudice and the challenges of daily life. When his brother-in-law Ibrahim (Tariq Al-Saies) is released from prison after eight years and joins the rest of the family, his dangerous secret sets off a chain reaction.” 4 Blocks Zero will make its debut on September 25, with new episodes dropping weekly on Fridays.
