DALLAS, TEXAS: A former royal chef has revealed the Queen's favorite sandwich, which she has eaten for over nine decades. According to her former personal chef, Darren McGrady, the Queen has had a jam sandwich every day since she was five years old. For 15 years, McGrady served as Queen Elizabeth's personal chef, along with Princess Diana, Princes William, and Prince Harry.

McGrady posted a video to his YouTube channel about recreating royal afternoon tea at home and the types of sandwiches available at Buckingham Palace. The chef, who has worked at the palace since he was a child, talked about garden parties that would be held there, with 6,000 people attending. His YouTube channel has more than 226,000-subscribers.

McGrady said one of the sandwiches served at royal garden parties had to be the jam penny - a jam and butter sandwich - which The Queen has had since she was a little girl and for afternoon tea ever since. The royal chefs, on the other hand, were only required to cater to the royal tea tent, and there was one sandwich staple that had to be on the menu at all times. He said, "This delicacy was the 'jam penny' - which The Queen was served as a little girl and has eaten for Afternoon Tea ever since." He added that the timeless recipe was "just bread and jam with a little butter, usually strawberry jam."

In the video, while talking about jam, McGrady said, "We'd make the jam at Balmoral Castle with gorgeous Scottish strawberries from the gardens." He then cut the sandwich into circles saying, "They were called pennies, after the size of the old English penny." He added, "Other popular afternoon tea sandwich fillings included tomato and cheese, and cucumber with mint cream cheese."

'Cannot believe that the Queen had THAT for an afternoon tea'

One of the viewers commented on the video on YouTube, "The weird thing is, going school in England anyone who had jam sandwiches was called poor! And here I am finding out the Queen eats them, wish I could show the bullies this haha! A lot of that food seems so simple but just is reminder there’s so much naturally nice things no need for all this Just Eat and Deliveroo!"  Another wrote, "Awesome Royal Recipes Chef! Thanks for sharing not only the recipes but also, the nice stories...very interesting. Best wishes." One person commented, "Cannot believe that the Queen had THAT for an afternoon tea sandwich! Insane! I guess food and enjoyment is all nostalgia isn’t it. Give me one of those cucumber sandwiches and a cuppa any day lots of love Darren!"
