'Flower of Evil' Episode 4: Cat and mouse chase between Hyun-soo and Ji-won ends, will love turn into hate?
'Flower of Evil' Episode 4 sees Ji-won face a shocking truth. She finds key evidence that leads to her husband's presence at a crime scene, but how is she going to perceive this evidence? Will the love between Ji-won and her husband Hee-seong (who is actually Hyun-soo in disguise) turn into hate over betrayal? These are the questions that went through our mind as we watched the episode unfold one twist after another.
One of the best things about this show is that it doesn't let your attention wander because you never know what is going to be thrown at you next. Take for instance, the moment in this episode when we realized that the well-behaved taxi driver was the one to kill Hyun-soo's acquaintance from the past. He has left a bug in the police precinct where Ji-won is working on the case and he even gets all the updates that they do. Which is how he finds out that an old lady from Hyun-soo's past neighborhood has a picture of Hyun-soo.
This taxi driver seems to not know how Hyun-soo looks and it is only to get a meeting with Hyun-soo that this taxi driver has gone to extreme lengths. He killed Do-gil, framed it to seem like it was Hyun-soo, and hopes to use all the media attention and the cops' attention to learn an important piece of information. This driver wants to know where his wife is and he hopes to find the same after talking to Hyun-soo. This man is obsessed, believes like the rest of the world that Hyun-soo was his father's accomplice and that leads to his conclusion that Hyun-soo must know the location of his dead wife. His wife was tagged as the seventh and last victim of Hyun-soo's father.
However, Hyun-soo never knew anything that his father had done. He is similar to his father in one characteristic and that is his Antisocial Behavior Disorder. This doesn't necessarily mean that he will live his life the way his father did and this entire show seems to set up this as the main message to be delivered through its plot.
For instance, when Do-gil asks Hyun-soo why he lives with Ji-won, Hyun-soo tells him that he needs Ji-won next to him to ensure that his father never appears in front of him again. He believes that his father is scared of Ji-won and he has also lied to himself that this is the sole reason why he needs Ji-won by his side. What Hyun-soo hasn't realized yet is that Ji-won moved him the moment she confessed her love to him and made him smile. This feeling that he had never felt before is what pushed the terror aside.
In the meantime, Ji-won's investigation leads her to Hyun-soo's old neighborhood where one of the women who was acquainted with him has a picture of him that could help the detectives identify him in the present. The taxi driver also listens in, gets the address and arrives before Hyun-soo and Ji-won to steal the picture. Hyun-soo gets there just in time to see who has been framing him, and the two get into a scuffle. Ji-won's arrival distracts Hyun-soo so he just sets up an appointment with this man and lets him go.
But before he could even escape from the scene, Ji-won spots him and follows him to an old shed. He attempts to somehow flee before she gets a look at his face and in the process, he also gets hurt because he tries to stop Ji-won from getting hurt. It is here that he loses his watch along with his customized strap that has his initials. When Ji-won sees this, she is shocked because she can't make sense of the fact that her husband would be the one to save her or why he would even be present. Where is this shocking twist headed? For now, it doesn't seem like she can make sense of it all and Ji-won will find any reason possible to explain what she has found. In the next episode, we will see what extent of damage has been done with this new information.
'Flower of Evil' will air on tvN on Wednesday and Thursday at 10.50 pm KST and can be streamed on Viki Global.
