'Fargo' Season 4: Release date, plot, cast, trailer and everything about installment starring Chris Rock

According to the show’s creator Noah Hawley, “This year, we’re really looking at the origins of the American capital crime, which is the exploitation of cheap labor. It took a long time for those people working to break into what we consider mainstream America”

After stalwarts like Billy Bob Thornton and Martin Freeman (season 1), Kirsten Dunst and Ted Danson (season 2), Ewan McGregor, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and David Thewlis (season 3), the latest one to join the ranks in Noah Hawley’s black comedy/crime drama anthology series ‘Fargo’ is comedian Chris Rock.

The fourth season of the show that was inspired by the '90s Coen Brothers' black comedy film of the same name is based in the 1950s. And also, this time, it’s not based in the icy state of Minnesota. This time, it’s based in Kansas City, Missouri.

Release date:

‘Fargo’ season 4 will premiere on FX on April 19, 2020.

Plot:

As per the synopsis released by FX: “In 1950, at the end of two great American migrations -- that of Southern Europeans from countries like Italy, who came to the U.S. at the turn of the last century and settled in northern cities like New York, Chicago -- and African Americans who left the south in great numbers to escape Jim Crow and moved to those same cities -- you saw a collision of outsiders, all fighting for a piece of the American dream. In Kansas City, Missouri, two criminal syndicates have struck an uneasy peace. One Italian, one African American. Together they control an alternate economy -- that of exploitation, graft, and drugs. This too is the history of America. To cement their peace, the heads of both families have traded their eldest sons.”

According to the show’s creator Noah Hawley, “This year, we’re really looking at the origins of the American capital crime, which is the exploitation of cheap labor. It took a long time for those people working to break into what we consider mainstream America.”

“The story of any family is the story of America. History is a living thing. The way we keep it alive is to tell stories about it and keep it in our mind and keep it fresh,” he told IndieWire.

Cast:

The 54-year-old American comedian, actor, writer, producer, and director is undoubtedly one of America’s most-loved comics. A cast member of ‘Saturday Night Live’ in the early 1990s, Rock has made a name for himself with comedy films like ‘Beverly Hills Cop II’, ‘Dr. Dolittle’, ‘Osmosis Jones’, the ‘Madagascar’ series, ‘The Longest Yard’, and ‘Death at a Funeral’.

“‘Fargo’ is funny like a Scorsese movie,” Rock explained to IndieWire. “It’s always within the character, within the story. That’s something I have to pay attention to.”

The 39-year-old American actor, screenwriter, executive producer, and musician is best known for his frequent collaborations with Wes Anderson. These films include ‘Rushmore’, ‘The Darjeeling Limited’, ‘Fantastic Mr. Fox’, ‘Moonrise Kingdom’, ‘The Grand Budapest Hotel’, and ‘Isle of Dogs’.

The 51-year-old American actor and producer is best known for his performances in films like 'Scream 2', 'Go', 'A Man Apart' and 'The Girl Next Door'. On the television front, he is known for HBO's 'Deadwood', FX's 'Justified', and Netflix's 'Santa Clarita Diet'.

Trailer:

The trailer for ‘Fargo’ season four, that dropped on Thursday, begins with a standoff between two gangs. One the one side are Italian Americans. On the other side are African Americans. And they both mean business.

In a way that is extraordinarily typical of a Coen Brothers comedy -- they are executive producers on all seasons of the show -- the trailer takes us through the beginnings of an impending gang war between two groups that want to seize power.

Unlike previous seasons of ‘Fargo’, however, the trailer at least doesn’t indicate a police protagonist. Allison Tolman, Patrick Wilson, Ted Danson, and Carrie Coon have played these roles in the previous seasons.

This time, cops are conspicuous by their absence. But that shouldn’t mean much, given how Hawley’s writing of the show -- and other shows -- has never disappointed in the past.

Even if based in Kansas City this time, fans can be glad of one thing: There is a character from Minnesota this season, who has the Minnesota accent that fans of the show have come to associate with the name ‘Fargo’.

If you like ‘Fargo’ Season 4, you will also like:

‘Fargo’ Season 1, ‘Fargo’ Season 2, ‘Fargo’ Season 3, ‘The Big Lebowski’, and ‘Burn After Reading’.
