Fans recall Jussie Smollett's beloved role in 'Mighty Ducks' after guilty verdict

Smollett, who made a name for himself as Jamal Lyon in 'Empire,' played mop-topped Terry Hall in the beloved movie

After Jussie Smollett was found guilty on Thursday, December 9, of staging a hate crime against himself, many of the people on the internet were reminded of the fact that the 'Empire' star once starred as a child actor in the movie, 'The Mighty Ducks.' 

The movie is hailed as one of the hockey fans' all-time favorite films on VHS, and which later went on to inspire a real-world NFL team. Smollett, who made a name for himself as Jamal Lyon in 'Empire,' was a mop-topped member of 'The Mighty Ducks,' playing the role of Terry Hall. His character was a hockey player from Minneapolis, Minnesota, who played for the District 5 Ducks, along with his older brother Jesse Hall. Terry played at the forward position and wore the number 1.

What was Jussie Smollett found guilty of?

The Cook County Circuit Court jury deliberated for as many as nine hours. Smollett, 39, was found guilty of five of the six felony disorderly conduct counts he faced, one for each time he was accused of lying to police. The charges carry a possible sentence of three years in prison, though legal experts say Smollett is more likely to get probation and be ordered to perform community service.

Special prosecutor Dan Webb described Smollett's account of the story as 'ridiculous'. Following the verdict, he said that “Mr Smollett would not have lost this case as he did today unless the jury found that he lied to them.” Smollett’s lead defense attorney, Nenye Uche, said, "I don’t for one second believe that justice was done today." Smollett refused to speak to reporters as he left the courthouse.

People who were never aware of the fact that Smollett was in 'The Mighty Ducks' were astonished by how far he had come. Others were simply disappointed. A commenter tweeted, "Did anyone else know that Jussie Smollett is Terry Hall from the Mighty Ducks? Mind blown...." One more noted, "Here's some NOT fake news, the great French actor Jussie Smollett has been found guilty for his hate crime hoax. He did better acting in Mighty Ducks."
