Whoopi Goldberg, 66, has been facing a huge backlash due to the statements she made about the Holocaust in January as thousands have signed a petition calling for her to be removed from the show 'The View'. The controversy has also led to a decline in the show’s ratings as compared to previous years.

As per The Sun, the ratings for the week of June 6 to June 10 have declined to 2.28 million as compared to recent years. For the same week in 2021, 2.36 million viewers witnessed the show. In 2020, ratings were even higher as over 2.58 million viewers watched the show. The decline in ratings comes as the viewers boycotted the ABC talk show after Goldberg's "Holocaust is not about race" remark, swearing on television, and other controversies.

On January 31, 2022, Goldberg made a controversial claim that the Holocaust “is not about race” during an episode of 'The View'. She was discussing a Tennessee school board’s controversial decision to ban Maus, a graphic novel about the Holocaust, in which six million Jews were brutally murdered by the Nazis. The 66-year-old said, “Let’s be truthful about it because the Holocaust isn’t about race. No. It’s not about race!” She constantly tried proving her point that the Holocaust was about “man’s inhumanity to man” despite protestations from her co-hosts.

Her remarks led to someone starting a petition on Change.org that demanded Goldberg “be fired from the daytime TV show for her repulsive verbiage and actions”, which stands now with more than 43K signatures. The petition reads, "Whoopi has made numerous remarks about race that have ruffled feathers. But her most recent comment attacking victims of the holocaust and the entire Jewish community are disgusting. Apologies are not enough when it comes to things like this, This can and will not be forgotten."

It further states, "We as Americans demand that she be fired from the daytime tv show 'The View' for her repulsive verbiage and actions."

Many viewers also slammed her on Twitter as one wrote, "@WhoopiGoldberg @TheView @JoyVBehar you should all be ashamed of the of everything that comes out of your s&$@ mouths. Hypocrite is all you are. Everyone if you!"

One of many felt that she shouldn't get fired. A user wrote, "I hope Whoopi doesn't get fired and put poor Omar the tent-maker out of work. The View ratings plummet after fans boycott talk show & demand host Whoopi Goldberg be ‘fired’ for ‘tone deaf’ comments."

Backlash continues

Earlier this month, Whoopi said "a**" while talking about parenting on the daytime talk show. She said, "Sometimes you have to be an a** to be a parent." As per The Sun, the comedian's usage of words didn't go well with the audience at home, with one writing on Reddit, "Whoopi and Sunny's [Hostin] foul language was a bit much today."
