LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: In the first trailer for his Netflix documentary, Arnold Schwarzenegger reflected on his difficult divorce from his ex-wife Maria Shriver and the "pain" he caused his family. The three-part series, 'Arnold,' which will debut on June 7, will trace the 75-year-old acting legend's journey from his modest roots in rural Austria to Hollywood action hero, with 'The Terminator' star reflecting on trying periods in his personal life.

The series also features previously unseen footage of the celebrity working out as well as behind-the-scenes photos of his entry into politics, where he ultimately rose to the position of Governor of California. Almost nine years after they initially met, Shriver and Schwarzenegger got married in 1986. Their divorce was eventually finalized in 2021 after they separated in 2011, reports Daily Mail.

What happened between Arnold and Maria?

In his life, Arnold Schwarzenegger has engaged in a wide range of endeavors and has succeeded to a great extent in many of them. The legendary bodybuilder is also well-recognized for being a devoted family man who frequently expresses how important his family is to him. In 1986, Schwarzenegger married American author and journalist Shiver. Their marriage was made public when, in 2011, they made their separation official, as per Sportskeeda.

In 2011, in an interview with The Los Angeles Times, Schwarzenegger admitted to having a relationship with Mildred Patricia Baena, a Guatemalan household employee living in their home at the time. Mildred Patricia and Schwarzenegger's son Joseph Baena, now 25, was born in 1997, five days after Arnold and Shriver's son Christopher was born.

Later it was found that Schwarzenegger himself admitted to his then-wife Shriver after she confronted him about the incident and after talking to the housekeeper Baena. Schwarzenegger accepted full responsibility for his conduct, including the financial consequences, notwithstanding his dishonesty in his marriage. Schwarzenegger and Shriver deserve praise for handling their separation cordially and peacefully. In December 2021, the former couple's divorce was officially formalized; Schwarzenegger and Shriver have remained together as a family ever since.

In August 1977, Tom Brokaw of NBC introduced Shriver to 'Terminator' actor Schwarzenegger at the Robert F Kennedy Tennis Tournament. In 1986, the former couple got married and went on to have four kids: boys Patrick, 29, and Christopher, 25, and daughters Katherine, 33, and Christina, 31.

Maria Shriver joined the convent after divorce

Following the breakdown of her marriage to Arnold Schwarzenegger, Shriver sought life guidance at a convent. On the 'Making Space with Hoda Kotb' podcast, Shriver said when she filed for divorce from Arnold in July 2011 after 25 years of marriage, she finally felt like she "had the freedom or permission" to be herself, as reported by People.

"I first felt like, 'Oh I'd better go and figure out like, what is the truth?'" 67-year-old Shriver said on the podcast. "I went to a convent — I did so many things — but one of the things I did is I went to a convent, a cloistered convent, to be in silence and look for advice." During her visit, the convent's Reverend Mother granted the journalist and author permission "to go out and become Maria," something, explains the author, she had never before revealed.

'I'm going to have to live with it for the rest of my life'

In the Netflix documentary trailer, appearing to refer to the cheating scandal, a contemplating Schwarzenegger said: "People will remember my successes but they will also remember those failures. It was very tough, on my marriage, on my relationship with my kids. I have caused enough pain for my family. I'm going to have to live with it for the rest of my life."

Schwarzenegger's friends mentioned in the documentary clip: "He had no staff, no real plan, he blew up the political system." Schwarzenegger declared: "There is problems and problems but I want to do the things that everyone thinks are impossible." The actor said, when asked about his never-say-die attitude, "You're always hungry, you're never really satisfied. No matter what it takes, work your a** off, do it, do it now."
