Emmys 2019: The internet is divided about Emmys not having a host this year

Emmys 2019 decided to let go off their tradition and not have a host this year but the internet was not too happy about this decision.

Taking a page from the books of the 2019 Oscars, the Emmy awards this year decided to go on with the show without a host. Stepping away from this tradition, the award ceremony decided that it was a good decision to start by acknowledging some of the shows that left their mark on the audience. Talking to the Oprah Magazine, Fox CEO Charlie Collier explained how the ceremony wanted to utilize the time remembering all the shows that had finished, but left a huge impact on the audience.

Ben Stiller and Bob Newhart speak onstage during the 71st Emmy Awards at Microsoft Theater on September 22, 2019 in Los Angeles, California.

“The conclusion was reached that this year because we were highlighting so many shows going away, that it would be useful to save the time," he said. “You have to look at the trade-off. If you have a host and an opening number, that’s 15 to 20 minutes that you don’t have to salute the shows.”

Usually, the Emmys opening consists of a monologue by the host that lasts for about 12 minutes. This year, things were a bit different as viewers got a chance to see the awards honoring some of the greatest shows on television.

Bryan Cranston speaks onstage during the 71st Emmy Awards at Microsoft Theater on September 22, 2019 in Los Angeles, California.

While the idea might have seemed amusing, fans had mixed reactions. Bryan Cranston was chosen as the guest host to open the Emmys this year along with a short video that showed clips of shows that ended and would be deeply missed. One user wrote, "here was literally a joke in the opening where Anthony Anderson said someone couldn’t open the #Emmys because they were “basic cable” and then they put the star of a basic cable show on stage, this show is such a mess."

Another added, "Ok who thought it was a good idea to put the #Emmys on @FOXTV?! My God this is awful. The opening, the presenters lame jokes, the announcer...it’s just too much SUCK for me tonight. #emmys2019." Meanwhile, others expressed their disappointment by sharing funny or cringe-worthy memes.

However, there were many who enjoyed the opening act. "I love this opening. #Emmys Say what you will but television, when done right, is an incredible achievement of ingenuity," wrote one user. While another added, "Bryan Cranston opening the Emmys Awards is the best thing ever #Emmys #Emmys2019."
