It was an emotional moment for all the fans of Chadwick Boseman when they got to know that the late actor received a posthumous nod for his final performance. The nominations for this year’s Primetime Emmys were announced on Tuesday, July 12, and included a lot of surprises. However, fans were ecstatic to know that Boseman was recognized for his stupendous voice-over in the hit Marvel series ‘What If…?’ and was included in the list of nominations.

The late actor has been nominated in the Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance category for his role as Star-Lord T’Challa in the Disney+/Marvel Studios animated series. Other actors to receive a nomination in the aforementioned category include Julie Andrews (‘Bridgerton’), Maya Rudolph (‘Big Mouth’), Stanley Tucci (‘Central Park’), Jessica Walter (‘Archer’), and F. Murray Abraham (‘Moon Knight’). The list also includes Boseman’s ‘What If…?’ co-star Jeffrey Wright, who voiced the character of The Watcher in the Disney+ series.

‘What If…?’ is the second project that the ‘Black Panther’ star has received a posthumous nomination. His Emmy nomination comes a year after he received his first-ever Oscar nod for his role in the hit movie ‘Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom’. Although he lost out to Anthony Hopkins in the Best Actor category, the veteran actor gave a heart-touching tribute to the late star.

As soon as Boseman’s name was announced as one of the Emmy nominees, fans flooded social media with emotional messages and congratulated the late actor for a “well-deserved” nomination. One of the fans wrote, “Congrats to Chadwick he played Starlord so well in ‘What if…?’ Well deserved. Rest In Peace always.” Another social media user tweeted, “Well deserved honor for an honorable, talented young man. Rewatching his movies is a joy.” Another fan wrote, “He was so good in that! I’m so happy he's got a nomination.” Meanwhile, one of the social media users tweeted, “This actually makes me happy. The show isn't the greatest but he was easily the best voice actor on the show.”

“Deserved and a reminder that a talent was taken far too soon,” said another one. “He definitely gave the most energy of the performances, of all of them that kinda fell flat or felt off, he did a really great job of adapting the various different versions of his character and how they'd sound, their different tones and personalities. Hope he's resting well,” wrote another social media user.

However, there were some who believed that it was a “pity nomination” and the late actor was only nominated because he passed away. One of the social media users wrote, “I liked the show... but this seems more like a pity nomination. There was nothing crazy or outstanding about any performance on that show.” Another user wrote, “Just goes to show you that it takes your death in order to be recognized for anything.”

Boseman died in August 2020 after a long battle with colon cancer. He was 43 years of age and at the prime of his career.

The ’21 Bridges’ star was not the only actor to receive a posthumous nomination at this year’s Emmys. Late actors such as Jessica Walters and Norm Macdonald also received nods for their work and got themselves in history books. Walters received a nom in the Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance category for her role in the series ‘Archer’ while Macdonald was recognized for his bittersweet comedy special, ‘Nothing Special’.

The 74th edition of the Primetime Emmys will be held on September 12 at the Microsoft Theater in Downtown Los Angeles, California.
