Emmys 2020: 'Last Week Tonight with John Oliver' wins Outstanding Variety Talk Series award fifth time in a row
A little cheer for dreary nights, as the 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards was held virtually, and as always, it was a night to remember. Host Jimmy Kimmel was seen hosting from an empty Los Angeles theatre filled with cardboard cutouts of the nominees, as Hollywood marks a major Covid-era award show.
It has been an exciting night so far as everyone's favorite 'Schitt's Creek' won around seven awards and there were several emotional speeches as the cast thanked their fans and family for the love. In the middle of it we have John Oliver winning what could be called the first Emmy of the show to not go to 'Schitt’s Creek'. The show won the prize for best variety talk series for the fifth year in a row at the 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday night, cementing the show's status as a Television Academy favorite.

'Last Week Tonight with John Oliver' won the award, which was presented by David Letterman. Oliver thanked everyone for the award, "Thank you so much, thank you to all of our staff. We've been fortunate to be able to do this during the pandemic, I do not take that lightly. My staff had talk to me through zoom, and told me that everything was going to be okay. Thank you Kate [Wife], I love you." Oliver is known for his witty and satirical takes on political and contemporary issues, and his show has been hugely popular.
